I like the sound actuator on the R- a weird hybrid noise of a VR6 and a flat 4 which is weird but I like it. Must admit I do sometime switch modes if I actually want to hear my music though....it's bloody loud!

The noise is significantly better than the GTI in comparison though.

Yeah that's the thing - music.  My car is the place I most get to listen to my music, and the reason I waited for Dynaudio to become available on the R.  So if it's that loud that it completely drowns music out and renders Dynaudio null and void, then it'll have to be turned down.

The choice is simple.

You've invested in Dynaudio so that music sounds better than from the standard system.
Do you wish to enjoy your music or do you want the faux sounds from the Soundaktor to drown your music? Music won for me.

The Soundaktor is a rubbish idea IMO. It's ok for the boy racer type and for some nut jobs. It just ruins the car for me.

Asker I know you're not a fan of the (to use your words) "faux" sound of the Soundaktor, and I can quite see your point, but "nut jobs"?  That's a bit harsh surely

I suspect I'll end up getting it turned down after a while but not before I've given it a chance, as I will with the legendary (thanks to MH) Bridgestones/Tombstones/Flintstones.

To be fair it's onl loud in race mode whilst pulling away with a bit of enthusiasm shall we say. I have dynaudio in mine also and the sound system is far far louder than the sound actuator. Or you could just switch to any other mode and it's quiet.

The dynaudio is outstanding also, one of best options on the list if you like music!

On mine everything is in race mode, and everything is turned up to the max (interior lights, soundaktor, everything) - love it all

If you're in Race mode and want to actually hear your music, you'll have to dial it right up. It's for this reason I'll probably get the soundaktor dropped to 30% or something that is on a par with the loudness of the GTD in Sport mode.

I will have to try normal mode tonight to see how loud that is.

My view is if you're in Race mode and you're nailing it, you're concentrating on driving rather than the music - and you want to hear the soundaktor doing it's bit.  I actually turn the music down when I'm driving it hard as I love the sound

Clearly MH!  But then if you're going to buy and drive an R, why drive it like it's a normal Golf?  Surely the whole point is to enjoy what the car was built for, and the car loves being driven like its stolen   I think maybe am1w should have stuck to his BMW crusier - I actually feel sorry for his R, the poor car just wants to be let loose but he keeps it on the leash - maybe he doesn't feel safe in it because the door isn't hung right?

Now, now Mr Nutjob, people get told off for baiting you know    I bet you can see and hear your R coming from miles off, with the maxxed up sound and lights.  In fact I'm sure I can hear it from my office window right now

I agree about Race mode, this is when you will want to hear the Soundaktor at its loudest.  But, sadly there will be times when I may need to use other modes.  Realistically, I’m probably not going to be doing the school run in full-on Race mode, although it does involves some tasty quiet rural roads…..tempting   :lipsrsealed:

As Remlapeel says, it’ll probably be a case of just choosing a quieter mode when the music is the priority – surely that’s the benefit of having the different modes at your fingertips.

MH - I have no issues whacking up the volume if needs be but that would defeat the object of both the Soundaktor and Dynaudio.

I've enjoyed putting my foot down, but the soundaktor seems to me like it's a guilty pleasure best enjoyed when you don't have any passengers who just hear the noise and think they are about to die. As the missus gets dropped off on the way to work and I'm hoping to organise a car share in my new place*, I feel the need to have the noise dialled back a bit.

* Perhaps not, has anyone seen Peter Kay's "Car Share"? Would not be wanting to give a lift to "Stink Ray".
