Poor sales pitch.
« on: 28 May 2015, 09:46 »
A few weeks ago I got a call out of the blue from the VW dealer I bought my MK6 Gti from.
Usual how was it going with the car, am I happy with it type chat.

Then obviously on to the real reason for the call-would I be interested in changing to a MK7?

So I gave the salesman a rough spec and told him to email me a quote based on a PCP.

He sent it later that day and it had no discount at all on the new car,no dealer £1250 contribution,(not sure if this is still a current offer but it was then,is it now a £1000?) but a decent trade in price for my car.

I had told him a drive the deal price I had,and had said he would have to get somewhere near this to begin to tempt me,he replied that DTD struggle to actually source the cars, but he would look at it during the initial phone conversation.

Anyway I replied to his email reiterating the DTD price and asking why it showed no £1250 dealer contribution and said again he would need to get somewhere near this price ,I thought at some stage I would get a revised quote but I never even got a reply!

How can they hope to sell cars with a crappy approach like this? They cant have me down as a complete timewaster because as I say I bought my current GTi from them.

I half feel like emailing again and copying the head sales manager in on the email!

I actually feel a bit flabbergasted that they do stuff like this and sell anything. Has anyone else had any similar experiences to this?

I'm actually not surprised by it. My guess is that they will be getting to the end of the quarter and will need the figures and won't expect the price-savvy negotiations and will look to other customers who are happy to pay list price (there must still be some?!)

If the dealer is that desperate for the sale, they will be back to you.

When I ordered mine, Liverpool VW originally said they couldn't match the DTD price but I left them stewing (as hard as it was), and they came back and matched it, and chucked the Service Pack in FOC to sweeten the deal.

I'm a Sales Manager myself, and if any of my staff responded (or failed to) customers in the way most car sales guys do, we'd have big problems. Frustrates the life out of me!

Not surprised in the slightest. I would imagine the sales guy is struggling for orders and has been pushed into this by his manager and called you completely unprepared and hoping you had just climbed off the "Green Bus" and jump at anything he threw at you and when you questioned it lost interest and moved on to the next unlucky sod on his list !!
Think he needs a new career.
If you want a new car, go somewhere else.

Gtiless, do you want a new MK7?

You probably threw him with your DTD questions and he wasn't prepared.  Poor sales pitch indeed!  Never fails to depress me how woeful some of these car sales guys (the very few decent ones excepted).

I would,I think be interested in a new MK7, but my MK6 has only done 26k and its just a weekend toy,so it would have to be a really good deal-I am not prepared to pay through the nose for one as I am not that bothered if I swap it or not. (If that makes sense!)

I was considering a Mk7 and got a quote for my MK6. It is pristine. It was so low that I laughed and walked away. The MK 6 is a good car and I think VW are pricing themselves out of the market with the MK 7 especially with the latest price hike.

When I chopped in my mk 7 GTI (one year old) the price one of the dealers gave me was so laughable - especially as they had a mk 6 GTI right outside the windown on for 4K more than they were offering me for mine - I also walked out (after pointing to the one on the forecourt).  Just cause they're in the selling game does not make them good sales people!

Salesmen always have targets and price brackets that they are allowed to work in.

Don't imagine that they are empowered to beat any price you roll up with.

I would never be upset if one refused my cheeky "its this much from these guys over there" approach - most will say "well why don't you buy it from them?" (and probably chuck in "you know they aren't as good as us" or something).

I'm sure they get these sort of approaches all day every day, don't be surprised if they really don't want to play.

Your chancing and it didn't work, go chance somewhere else now - you'll win in the end or discover that its all swings and roundabouts with every vendor.

What plate is your Mk6? we've got similar miles on the clock.

It does make sense to me.  I felt that way moving from Mk5 to 6, really wasn't fussed at all.  I very nearly didn't get one (it was one of the last off the line) ummed and ahhed whether to hold off and wait for the 7.  But I've loved it.  I knew then I would move to the Mk7 for the MQB platform, and after the initial first batch were out   The reason for the R -  that proverbial itch to be scratched.

Just cause they're in the selling game does not make them good sales people!

Nail hit on head!
