S3's looks are really growing on me. It is exquisitely appointed on the inside and is a cut above the R. The S3 is beautifully made and I like the chrome window surrounds whereas the R has that horrid nasty rubber stuff. What really annoys me most about the R is that you can see the painted door frames inside. Having a Black car helps. Definitely not very nice. Cheapens the car.
Do you seriously believe that Audi's are put together better than VW's?? I can't see it myself.

Yes, I seriously believe it and yes, you can't see it yourself.

Well, I think probably the S3 has some more premium trim, but then again for the extra money, it bloody well should have an extra 50 quid's worth of trim from the premium bin.

I don't think an S3 is much likely to be any better put together than an R, perhaps it's in the eye of the beholder.

I'm sure I've said it recently on another thread, but the Audi chrome window surrounds

I'll take the R's looks over the S3.

Well at least there's a choice there then but still not sold on the rest of the car.

Yeah you can have "black" trim, it costs extra (naturally, this is Audi) - 395 quid

I do think the S3's full in ya face leather sports seats are rather nice looking but they do sting you for it and then some - 795 quid

Quite probably a really nicely blinged S3 does look nicer than a Mk7R but once again, spunking another 10k on toys and bling?

I still say you'd only do it if you were a badge snob.... and could find some way of not shoving the brochure up where the sun doesn't shine on the Audi salesman.

I'm not and I couldn't, so I drive a VW :)

I can't see the Audi S3 (or any other A3) being put together any better than an R (or any other Golf) either. It just won't happen if you understand high volume and lean manufacturing techniques employed by car manufacturers. Robust work instructions strictly adhered to (which will be common to all the mainstream VAG models) for those jobs with a human input, common tooling/templating, and standardised robotics on standardised and validated progreamming for the automated stuff etc. Time is money, every job will have a tolerable limit on it and a fixed window of time to do it if there is a level of adjustment rather than "one way only" guides ("peg in hole and secure around" type lining up of components) - they don't have time for fettling 1/10th of a mm here or there before the next car is coming through. If anything is fixed beyond tolerance then it will be flagged for readjustment later if it does not impede further build at that point.

To get the kind of perfection that is imagined Audi achieve, you need to look at the likes of the glass factory in Dresden where the Phaeton is hand-built by technicians wearing white cotton gloves.

Under the skin, almost all of the parts are the same, is there a better way of screwing the Audi together than the VW (or Seat or Skoda) when almost all of the parts are the same? Reliability surveys show that Audi does not sit at the top of the VAG tree, it is distinctly average on that score, along with most of the rest of the VAG range.

Exterior-wise, the A3/S3 is every bit as likely to suffer the same degree of orange peel (which is not at all bad by today's standards with the use of water based paints - BMWs and Hondas are much worse), the body panels are welded in the same way. Everything working off the same platform (MQB for the latest Golf/A3 and others) will be built the same way.

We've seen the Seat Exeo take over where the last gen of Audi A4 left off in the same plant as it was essentially the same car with a Seat interior and a rebadge. Did they move the Audi people on and bring in Seat people trained to a lower standard and see building standards suddenly drop off when the Seat model took over and the new A4 went elsewhere?

When you buy any mainstream VAG car, you get standardised building techniques throughout. When you buy an Audi over a VW then you get plusher door cards, part/full leather seats as standard....and a serious lack of standard equipment.

No S3 for me then    I'm no badge snob either.....well, within reason

No, the R is still the only one that delivers on all my criteria.  Nothing beats it in the 'understated looks' department

MH - I think most of us (bar one, or two) are agreed that the difference in build quality between R and S3 is probably zero (for the reasons you state).  The cabin of the S3 may be superior but if that was my number one priority I'd be driving something very different.  The Golf cabin does nicely for me.

I am glad many of you are satisfied that the Golf has as good a build quality as an A3. However, I beg to differ. This in no way means that I dislike a Golf or wished I did not acquire one.

I spent the last couple of weeks, whilst taking long works and jogging, looking at numerous A3 Sportbacks including 4 S3s and 5 door Golfs including 1 GTI, 3 GTDs and 3 Rs that have populated my area in London. Yes, I have nothing better to do, it would seem!

From my careful observations of the external panel fit on these cars there is no question that the Audis are far better put together than the Golfs. The common problems with nearly all the Golfs: (1) badly hung front doors, (2) non-centralised grilles and (3) inconsistent panel gaps. Of the Audis I observed, only one had a badly hung door and their panel gaps were very tight and consistent.

Whether you disagree or not believe me is neither here nor here. I state what I observed and my eyes do not lie I can assure you.

Having said the above, I will reiterate that am still pretty happy I got an R.
