It is obvious that VW UK don't know their arse from their elbow.
Wonky cars, wonky configurator, wonky-ed customers!
What are you trying to say?

Well contrary to dear monkeyhanger's protestations, the 3 GTIs and 2 Rs I have seen are wonky in build, the UK VW Configurator is definitely wonky with its weird price structure for the Tech Packs and as we buy these cars, we can be classified as wonky customers.

Fair point, no point in denying the obvious

Weird price structure, that's putting it politely

I like to think I'm a little more laid back about these things, but I may be deluded.  Anyway, you'll be the first to know if my R is wonky

I hope your R is not wonky. They will have to answer to me! Your total satisfaction is my mantra.

I will at some stage de-wonkify my R. I am good friends with the owners of a hypercar bodyshop. That should do the trick.

As long as my R goes from A to B whilst giving me some pleasure and without breaking down, I will be most satisfied.

Tech Pack for the R Estate is £1240 but it is £1840 for the R Hatchback!
Now how crazy is that?

Also, there is no DSG Option showing on the Configurator for the R Estate.

Have you seen the GFVs for the estate R? Scary! On PCP terms, the estate is £200pm more than the hatchback because of it - 30% retained at 36 months.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

I did actually, as you brought my attention to this on the other forum. Scary and crazy, I must admit.
Why would one want to get a total minger like the R Estate and not a BMW 335d xDrive M Sport or any other 3 Series BMW hearse with their customary 25% discounts? The BMW is so much better looking. Amazing cars IMO.

Quite!

.... the R estate is an abomination to a purist like me

There is not a single vile word I can think of that can do it justice. The kindest thing one can call it is a hearse with an emphasis on the last four letters.

I wouldn't call it a minger (as estates go), but with VW's complete lack of confidence in residuals for the model, £653 a month in standard 36 month PCP terms makes it one seriously expensive car, you could lease a Porsche Cayenne Estate (due in Aug) for about that monthly outlay! £653 a month buys you a hell of a lot more car than an R estate if you shop around.

Even the Beetle (GFV = 35% of RRP) holds value much better than the R estate.

The Audi S4 Avant (with metallic paint but no other extras) comes in at a "much more reasonable" £510pm on the same PCP terms. What are VW playing at setting up the finances for a car that will see you weighing over 80% of the car's RRP (between depreciation and interest) in 3 years?

Seriously, just 30% GFV????
I'd imagine the GTD variant would have a higher % GFV surely?
I'm genuinely shocked at the R estate GFV.

On a different note, and wildly off topic (sorry James) but Asker, is that a normally acceptable discount off a BMW and easy to obtain? I had a chance conversation with a BMW salesman the other day (I was nowhere near a car dealer btw, just an off the cuff conversation) and he said they had a pre- reg M135i in at a 'significant' discount. I didn't discuss it any further than that so have no idea about extras or gearbox or even colour but it did send a little smile to my lips as I brought back my memory of a hired M135i I had a goon which was the first car since a Lupo GTI I borrowed for an evening many many years ago that genuinely made me laugh as I drove it.

I'm genuinely shocked at the R estate GFV.

Looking at all the estates, the £21230 1.4 122ps SE has the best GFV of the bunch at 46% of RRP, and £425 more than the R that has an RRP of £11910 more. The mid to high range estates have abysmal GFVs, New Peugeot 308SW on "passport" terms have a far better GFV %.

You'd have to be crazy to be looking to an R estate on those terms.
