One thing that strikes me with all this Mirrorlink stuff, is won't a Mirrorlink enabled MIB system cannibalize sales of their top end Navigation systems ?

After all, If i could have got the Co-Pilot Nav program on my Iphone up on screen on a standard non navi system (which is much better than the built in Navigation program), then I probably wouldn't have specified Navigation at all in the car and saved myself over £1700 !

Actually, its not a VW thing, its a industry consortium thing and the applications that are "drive certified" have to be tested to make sure that they are not distracting:

So maybe a nav app can become certified, but your netflix app will never be allowed to be used in motion.

The system certainly does not work with just any old app, for safety reasons.

Well certainly for Apple CarPlay you can definitely 'mirror' and control the built in Maps application. Quite a few videos on YouTube showing this, and yes it would offer similar functionality to factory Nav at a fraction of the cost!

I find it hard to envision a situation where VW allow you to link a smart phone for 100 quid giving you full sat-nav capability - while trying to sell sat nav at a 700, 1200, 1800 etc quid option..... but maybe I am just cynical...  :whistle:
