Car died on me.
« on: 18 March 2015, 23:35 »
I was driving home last night from work on a dual carriageway doing 50 in 5th gear driving gently and I got the error on my MFD that my ACC and Front Assist were not available. What looked like a coil light and symbol for the ACC were also displayed as in the picture below.

The car lost all power and I crawled up the slight hill. I could barely rev over 2500rpm
When I stopped at a roundabout I got another message stating my Stop Start wasn't working.

I thought it was just a gremlin so drove home switched the car off and forgot about it. A few hours later I used the car again and it was back to normal but interestingly the power and responsiveness of the car had been the best it had ever been since owning it!!
This time I gave it a workout for a mile or so with no problems then when I was back to cruising at 60ish the car again had the same symptoms as above with no pwer. I came off the dual carriageway, switched the car off and back on and it was fine for the rest of my 20 mile journey there and back even giving it a workout.

Went out this morning to drive to work and with just the ignition on I got the same warning lights as above and then had no power when i started it up. No switching off and back on helped. It was a nightmare to drive.

When I went to come home from work tonight it was still exactly the same.  The car is fitted with a tuning box and unfortunately I didn't have time to remove it but on my way home from work I simply changed to a different map and when I turned the ignition on the warning lights were away and it drove fine all the way home.

Anyone know what the coil and acc lights lit up together mean?

I'm curious as to why when initially I got the problem and just restarted the car a few hours later it felt a lot more powerful and responsive than it ever had. I don't think it was a figment of my imagination.

I don't have the GTD but from my previous cars, isn't a coil a glow plug warning?

Yes it is. It's also used for something else (related), but I can't be bothered to dig out the manual.

I'd take your box down a notch if you have it on a +2 or +3 setting, maybe remove it altogether for a few weeks as you're approaching needing a service.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

The box was on 1:1 then 2:1. Both settings put the car into limp mode. 3:1 so far seems to be ok. I'm just about to go to work so will see how it is on that setting.

I've attached all the errors from VCDS and it appears Fuel Rail/System Pressure is too Low. I thought it would have been too high with a box attached?

Definitely a tuning box gremlin as this has happened to mine too. Exact symptoms, exact warning lights.

P3asa: Might not be that the system pressure is too low, but that the car thinks it is too low when you're under a low load situation - some implausibility reading thrown up when the modified signal is reading less than an established normal baseline?

I was always on 3+1 with mine and my dad's had no issues with it since. He's probably done twice as many miles with it on his in 4 months than I did in the previous 7 months.

A bug in the software of the tuning box, get the tuners to fix it then????

Not sure why the ADC and other non engine bits would be chucking faults out related to a tuning box that intercepts and modifies fuel rail and boost signals, but stranger things have happened. Try the car without the box and see if the issues replicate themselves?

Had exactly the same fault as OP last week but in a completely standard GTD with no tuning box or modifications.

Cruising on the motorway at 70 then a big judder followed by flashing glow plug light, ACC error, start/stop error messages and a complete lack of any power. Limped to the services and turning off seemed to reset the problem until the same thing happened about 20 miles later.

Took it into Warrington VW who told me a flashing glow plug light means it's gone into "limp home" mode and this causes the errors on the other systems.

Diagnostic machine reported low fuel pressure fault although after 2 days investigation a VW Master Technician didn't find anything other than a possible loose connection on a sensor.

Whatever they did seems to have solved the problem as it hasn't happened again but I would say this is too much of a coincidence to blame the tuning box on your car.
