Mk2 GTI starts then cuts out
« on: 17 February 2015, 12:13 »
Hey all,

As mentioned in my post in the newbie section, i have purchased a Mk2GTI that was non running but suspected it was the fuel pump and starter motor...which turned out to be right after i had the garage replace them because they were seized.  It was turning over yesterday and it started, but only run for about 2 seconds till it cuts out. The garage is now saying that it could be another fuelling issue, and this time its the fuse box inside the car (beneath the steering wheel) not delivering enough power to the fuel pump for it to run.

Question is, does this sound plausible? you can hear the relay clicking when turning the ignition. And also is it too much of a job to do, to switch fuse boxes? i'm more than happy to be doing that.

I welcome any response if you have had similar issues or know what may be wrong here.

**Also as this car has been stood for 7 years, could this be a result of fuel quality too?

Thanks

Gavin

Sorry, didnt mean to be that vague!

its a 1989 1.8 8v 3dr.

Yes they have replaced the one in the fuel tank from what i can gather, however i don't know if the one underneath the car is functioning properly or been tested.

Again i would have thought the garage would have checked the fuel lines and filter seeing as they knew the car had been stood for so long, but i will double check with them regarding those things you have brought up

To be honest, those are the things i would have checked myself but didn't have tools to hand. I will be annoyed if they turn out to be the cause! Presumed it would be an easy fix when i got it that it would have been up and running in no time...wish i just did it myself now

There is a fuel pump under the car drivers side by the rear wheel. You should hear it prime its normally quiet easy to hear. Turn the ignition on without starting the car you should hear it. It has a large attached fuel filter on it. Put some new fuel in, but I had similar issues with mine and it was indeed the undercarriage fuel pump. Do it yourself it isn't hard get a replacement and bolt it...renew the fuel lines going to it too.

ok so iv just spoken to the garage, they are adament that the fuse box under the steering wheel is the culprit...went as far to say if you can get the fuse box for me, i will have it running...scouring for a fuse box now then

** Am i right in thinking the 1989 is a CE1 fuse box?
