I think the key points were missed here and blown out of proportion.

No one said the R isn't faster than the GTI that's pretty obvious when the R has 296BHP, 370NM of Torque and a 0-60 time of 4.9 seconds vs 230BHP, 350NM of Torque and a 0-60 time of 6.3 seconds. I'd be concerned if it wasn't faster, it is. But a different planet faster? I wouldn't say so. A remapped Golf R or the R400 or anything sub 4 seconds then yes i'd agree it would be on another planet to the GTI but that's besides the point as would be your brothers millionaires collection of exotic sports cars. We were comparing the GTI to the R, not the GTI to a Maserati as it's quite obvious who would win that one.

Posting on a forum specifically named "golfgtiforum.co.uk" filled with GTI enthusiasts saying how much better the R is to the GTI is kind of asking for a debate if if i'm totally honest and even if not intended it's going to get peoples backs up. It would be like me posting on the Renaultsport forum about how much quicker my GTI is next to their Clio 197's. It wouldn't go down well.

I'm sure everyone is happy for you with your R and as i've always said it is an excellent car and I even said it sounds better than the GTI and is quicker. We'd all love to be kept updated as to how your doing with your R but I think it's also important how you compare the two cars and the words you use. I will apologise if some of my comments offended anybody but I won't apologise for defending the GTI in a truthful and honest way in it's home turf of the GTI forum. This place is already turning into rforum.co.uk as it is and I won't sit silent if I disagree with comments made against the GTI, which is an engineering masterpiece. There will always be better cars out there but I think it's important that we remember what the GTI is, that being the most all rounded hatchback money can buy and that is what it excels at. I know you weren't slagging off the GTI but if you look at it from other people's point of views thats how it can come across.

Some people take the banter to heart (and the GTDers took a lot of stick early days), but there aren't many people out there looking for a nasty argument, just a debate. People here jumping ship to the R from both the GTI and the GTD aren't in a tiny minority, so it's a popular theme, and all three of the performance Golfs share a lot of DNA, it isn't exactly VW vs BMW here.

The popularity of the R can't be ignored, for those that won't be keeping their car forever and just look into what their car will cost them over 2/3/5 years are seeing that monthly basis, the R is a massive bargain due to the residuals which more than cancel out the higher RRP vs the GTI. Some here say the PP is so much better than the standard GTI and it's a no brainer to have it, pretty similar circumstance comparing PP to GTI as R to PP or GTI.

Choosing a GTD over a GTI or R can make a lot of sense to people, depending on their circumstances. Far better mpg, lower tax implications and significant (but not huge) residual differences add up to significant monthly savings.

Compare the R to a GTI though and you have minimal mpg differences, more stability/traction from the Haldex and more power as well as residuals so good that they can soak up the extra cost of the car and extra fuel costs for the average miler. Picking an R over a GTI pretty much has no financial penalty to the private buyer/leaser.

Some people will always want the GTI over the R for various reasons, but i'd take a punt that if they hadn't already bought their GTI and lined the 2 up next to each other to make a purchase, most would be getting the R, and there's nothing wrong with that.

This place is far friendlier than rforum at the outset and ongoing (most there do seem to calm down a bit once they get to know you), maybe we've had more time to get to know each other. It's a good thing that the people who have or will soon have an R are staying with this forum for their primary car forum needs because it's a nicer place to be.

Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Would be interesting to know from someone who has had a GTI and now a R what their thoughts are on turning circle, I find it a major pinta on the R and cannot remember the demo GTI I had being that bad

It may be the GTI forum but plenty on here without gti's, or even VWs for that matter   No reason R owners should be banished forever to the rforum

I certainly intend to stay on here when I move to a mk7 R next year.  I visit the r forum from time to time for info but much prefer this place and that's down to the people, good and bad

Is it much bigger than the GTI's turning circle?

I agree totally guys. It's not a case of banishing people to the R forum. Everyone on here is great and I wouldn't wanna see them move forum.

It's just human instinct that if you go on a GTI forum and pick fault with the GTI it's going to naturally annoy people who are passionate about their GTI's.

Anyway, let's forget about it ;)
