Any ideas on what the problem could be with this? The crank position sensor and relays had recently been changed before it was parked up.

All searches I do point to 8v issues not 16v so I am struggling to find a cure.

Cheers,

Adrian

If the ecu thinks the timing is out it will still go into safe mode, of this I am 99% sure.
I would check the crank sensor is correct/fitted correctly

it could be this, try key popping it.. ( i know it sounds silly) but rev at 2k, then key pop, that should let it rev to maximum, this fools the ECU.. if it is that im certain its what your man above says.^^^. I know this from previous experiences!

  • VCDS and VCP - fault codes, coding, VIM activation
If it only revs to 5k it's in safe mode => fault memory will tell you why

Nah it'll only work on carbed vehicles. Injected vehicles stop fuelling when engine braking or when the ignition is off, whereas carbs continue to fuel through the pilot jets as the engine is still cycling. Basically, JoseMcGeevio is talking b*llocks.

Ok maybe key popping isnt the correct phrase, that link clearly isnt what i was trying to suggest i wouldnt rev the bollocks off my car when its cold.
And i also said revving at 2000rpm..

I wouldnt post something online just for the fun of it or to mislead somebody(which i did!). I WAS NOT suggesting "key popping" the vehicle will make
the problem dissapear i was suggesting keeping a constant rev @ say 2000rpm then maintaning the same pressure on the throttle whilst turning the
ignition on and off rapidly, then try it.. I had that problem and i was sitting with my thumb up my arse and i was informed that it works by a chap off
clubpolo, this will not solve  the problem but the car will rev to its maximum until you next restart your engine then the problem will occur.

I will post a video up of the problem i had i recorded it then you can make your judgement whether i am talking 'bollocks'.

Ok, noted. It is, however, well documented (on here, and many other places) that the revs being limited at 5k can be caused by the cambelt slipping a tooth, amongst a few other things. If there is even a slim possibility of this being the root of the problem, the potential for damage by 'tricking' the ECU into allowing the engine to rev over 5k is significant.

A more sensible approach would be to have the fault codes read, and proceed from there.
