I agree! I know the top end models cost circa £30k but I don't think it's right to say it shouldn't rust. It's a mass produced car and all cars rust unfortunately

Anyone having issues with rust on the wheel hubs not sure I have the right terminology here, its painted silver but on all 4 of my wheels its showing about 1/4 of it has now rusted - would this be covered under warranty ?

Not had it start on the Gti as if yet but expecting it we had the same happen in the wife's scirocco went to dealers with that to be informed it's not warrenty covered it's down to wear and tear sk I just bought some high temperature calliper paint and did both the callipers and hubs all way round..

Do you need to apply a VHT paint or is hammerite got enough high heat properties

I've used Hammerite with good results.

This has been going on, to my knowledge, ever since I had my Golf Mk iv new. I've seen brand new cars in the compound with rusty hubs. Shouldn't happen on any car, these days, as there are plenty of ways of stopping it which wouldn't cost a lot. I reckon it's just one of those things that "have always been done that way". Lazy!

I was concerned with the heat issue. I rubbed my hubs down to paint with Vht silver engine paint.
They lasted 6 months before some surface rust came through, I will use Hammerite next as it may have the thickness required to hide the annoying rust.

Bump to see how people are getting on a while after painting?

I need to tidy up my GTI which is almost 3 years old. Are people getting good results by wire wooling/sanding the hubs and then applying silver/grey hammerite?

Any recommendations for specific paints greatly appreciated.

Thanks

At the great risk of sounding like a smartarse but unintentionally, can I suggest you read this thread? Loads of good advice and recommendations above including longevity. Good bump though.

I did mine in April. Just scrubbed them a bit with sandpaper and then a couple of coats of silver smooth hammerite. They still look good today ~3 months later. The real test though will be the winter, but I'm glad I did them as they looked terrible.
