Yeah that's good. Sometimes though it needs unticking and then ticking again for it to work properly.

hi everyone, hope it's ok to jump in here... am looking to buying an mk6 (60 plate), which has a 'standard' radio/display unit fitted (looks like the rns510 but doesn't have satnav).

I'd like to upgrade it to something with satnav - is the rns510 my only choice, or recommended choice? Having consulted my local VW garage, they recommended a Kenwood model?

I've seen videos/guides that the retrofit is pretty straightforward - but am I right in thinking it will still need to go to a dealer/garage to be coded? Is that something which VW garages are happy to do, or will only a few selected independent places do it?

sorry for any basic questions, am reading up on this at the moment - most threads I've found online are from a few years ago, so am just after some up-to-date info :)

It will most likely be the RCD510 does it have a DAB button on the top right? if it does then you could get a RNS510 with DAB much more expensive than the normal RNS510. You will need it coding for the RNS510 to be fully integrated to the car i.e. the Navigation to appear on the MFD/DIS between the speedo and rev counter. Otherwise though it seemed that the unit I had seemed work ok even though it wasn't codded in properly yet. Does the car you are interested in have Bluetooth too as that is a more coding if you want voice control from the steering wheel on the RNS510 too.

thanks for the info :)
i'm actually not too fussed about having bluetooth/voice control - i have those in my current car and never use them (just personal choice, I don't like taking calls while driving and have never really benefitted from voice control).

but i'll find out if the current unit has a DAB button...

I think I'm running into the seemingly common issue of the local VW garage not being completely up to speed... the only option they gave was to install a Kenwood system (don't have the model# to hand) and it would be just over £1k fitted

might have to find a decent local independent place...

(I also want to ask about retrofitting cruise control, but will find another thread for that )

Dealer fit cruise control should be about 180 quid. The dealer will be pushing the Kenwood as vw have a deal to use them for aftermarket fitting. The one I saw in the dealer was s4it and the rns is much easier to use. User interface on the Kenwood was very poor.

Thanks mcmaddy! I do the look of the OEM unit, so good to know about the Kenwood deal. I'll find out today which unit is currently installed...

(I promise to ask about CC in a different thread, but very quickly, do I understand correctly that it depends on the month of manufacture if CC fitting is possible or not? The vw garage just flatly said it's not possible)

As others have said, the dealers will try to push you towards the Kenwood. However it is a ridiculous amount of money from them.  You can pick up a second hand RNS510 for half that amount. It will do everything you need it to and look like it should be there. Even if you don't get a DAB model, there are hideaway DAB tuners that you can hook up to them.

Where abouts are you? I'm sure there will be members on here that could help you with fitting and coding. It really is a straightforward job to do. I managed it (eventually) so it can't be that hard.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Thanks dubber... I think the fitting looks do-able, I just don't have the kit to do the coding. So thought it might make sense for the whole job to be done in the garage.

Once I've found out what unit is currently installed, I'll update the thread and see if dab is do-able/worthwhile

(Have joined in another thread for the CC chat!)

Cruise control is possible but sons like your dealer isn't interested. Try a different dealer.

it doesn't have the DAB in the top right... it would be nice to have DAB, but if it's considerably more then I'm not too fussed. so if the current unit has no DAB/no satnav, that'll be the RCD510?

would anyone be able be kind enough to let me know which OEM units are available to me?
presumably the RNS510 with/without DAB?
