RNS 510 questions
« on: 28 April 2014, 14:48 »
I've just fitted one into my Golf, but not coded it yet. Every works perfectly except for it talking to the DIS, but the coding will sort that, however...

1. When turning it on after it has been left for a while, I get a screen full of "system starting" which seems to take for ages. Is this normal?

2. When selecting reverse, the screen goes blank except for a small message at the bottom of the screen saying "Look, safe to move?" The same message that you get with a camera or parking sensors. I have neither.

Are these things that will be sorted with the correct coding, or are there settings in the radios set up menu that I can change? It's an LED version with the * button, if that makes a difference.

How long are you talking for it to boot up?
Is that to access the music or just to be able to access the RNS510.
My RNS used to takes ages to access the music on SD card but that was due to my file structure though.
It was always ready if say I was reversing out the drive as the rear view picture would come on straight away.
I reckon your RNS had been coded for a RVC hence it giving the message. Coding should sort it out and the DIS

It takes what seems like an age to boot up. Not the best answer I know, I'll time it later. It just seems a lot longer than the RCD510 that was in before. The RNS315 in my Passat fires up straight away.

As soon as the "Welcome to Volkswagen" screen has gone, music plays from whatever source was last playing, but I still get the blank red/orange screen saying "System Starting"

If the car didn't have a rvc or parking sensors before then nothing will change after fitting an RNS. Its the car that carries the coding for rvc and sensors not the RNS. The RNS needs coded properly before it will work but it shouldn't take ages to boot up. Do you know what software and maps it's running?

Mine does the system starting thing if it's been off for a while. It's never been coded when the lights were installed i stuck this in to save time. Here's a top tip given to me and i should be killed before i let this little secret out! when buying a car make sure it has all the toys!

I came to that conclusion soon after buying my Passat last year. I bought a DSG Sport with no options on at all. They come fairly well equipped, but I really wanted xenons, camera and parking sensors, but there were very few year old cars around with that spec. I bought a standard car because it was the right money with a view to retro fitting the extras with the money saved, but now it has come down to it, I can't bring myself to part with the money.

I only got the sat nav because well errr the screen looks good when you have it on the nav. Cant see what i'm poking on the screen blind as a bat.Got a oem manual off ebay cant be bothered to read the bloody thing! So that was i think £500 well spent.

It'll be good when it works properly after being coded. Persevere and you'll reap the rewards.

The RNS in my MK6 used to be quite slow to boot up at times too. I'd see that orange screen and the "system starting" for a couple of minutes some days. It was quite random though, some days it started up instantly, other days I got the slow boot. No real pattern to it.

Was yours from the factory, or retro fitted?
