I can see what you have done so far but spending £8 on a thermostat tells me you haven't got an OEM part = BIG mistake you will be replacing that shortly...

Myself and my cuz were working on a mk2 golf gti that we bought for messing about with so we could learn a few things.
This mk2 on IDLE would bellow white smoke but once warm all was fine.

We also notice when driven all was fine.

I suggested an oil change at the time which improved it which would suggest is what the owner did to your car.

After alot of this and that the head gasket was found to be blown.

It's your car and totally upto you BUT i would get a compression test done before using that car but then thats just me.

Niño

Hello mate and thank you for all your advice, I went this morning to a friends garage who isn't the best but not a cowboy haha, we plugged the car in on a snap on scanner and it came back with a lambda sensor pre cat fault.
As for the oil sensor workshop warning that has been resolved, the plug had been knocked off the sump as it's low.
The car passed MOT emissions and with flying colours
As for the main concern...... Well it transpires that it's blue smoke that comes out, it's mostly when idle and when starting, once warm it's okay and under load it's not present.
Thee is no loss of coolant and no loss of oil in the last 100 miles

I ordered some bits but I'll wait until I resolve this issue first

Lambda sensor £75
Coolant temp sensor £11
Thermostat £8
Discs front £43
Pads front £30

So no compression test done yet but 2 mechanics say the head gasket looks good

Sorry i read this post you did and i thought your thermostat cost you £8 didnt realise it was a typo.

As for remapping your car i would focus on ensuring your car is running right first  :undecided:

This is good advice.

If it was me I wouldn't spend anything on the car until I knew what the issue is.  It could be you are throwing good money after bad.  Why not listen to the good advice people are giving you.  Getting the problem diagnosed is the priority.  Just looking at your list of parts bought already that's £200+ including VAT.  This could be money wasted if the car really is a lemon.  You may not even need all these parts but as you haven't had the problem diagnosed yet you don't know
