More problems .... Advice/Help needed!!!

alright guys, so Rain came over (Cheers d00d, muchos appreciatous  )

Did a few things ( I think he will post a bit about it too as two povs is always better !)

Checked spark plugs - one had some carbon in it , another the lead came off , so maybe possible loose connection ... also checked dizzie .. that seemed ok ... not sure if we checked the connecter that you talk of dubslug - maybe !

Erm, did notice the fuel pump just keeps pumping .... no idea why ...

So a few questions that maybe someone knows and saves me a bit of time - which relay stops the fuel pump pumping ...does somene know or will I have to go and check each one (good idea though Blue    ).   

And surely if the ecu was fried there would be no sparks @ the plugs  

Back to the drawing board or have I actually broken a gti under unknown circumstances?  The alternator seemed to spin a bit too

Oh and woul my heater matrix breaking , causing fluid and steam to pop up everywhere cause any electrical disturbance?  Funny how two days after cutting off my heater matrix everything else doesn't work 

Gonna try a bit of cranking by hand later this week ( no time due to work - but dont wanna give up just yet ) 

Oh and I definately need a new battery - Will any do, or does it not really matter ?

a few of my mates who forgot to disconnect the battery and ripped the earth straps off had the same problem. The ECU's fried and caused the pump to run on and on and then this would flud the engine.

I would get another ECU, take out all the plugs and the king ignition lead. Then crank the engine over so the petrol squirts out of the spark plug holes. Plug everything back in with a the new ECU and try again.

You can always flog the ECU's on ePay later


I once had this problem and even the garage didnt know what was wrong. It just fired up one day

Got one on the way ! 

We did try a car charger/booster - not sure what they are called ... u know the thing one on +ve terminal, other on engine somewhere and did notice a bit of smoke coming off the engine one .... does that indicate bad earthing still?  Does having too many earths cause a bad earth too ? 

Gonna source those uber long earth leads like rubjonny suggested.

What baffles me is that before when the ecu was buggered all I would hear is a tick if I turned the key ... now I dont hear that ... I hear the fuel pump priming ... noises from the car ...... surely if it was buggered it would be silent ? 

Dont wanna blow another ecu lol - damn things !

Did you throw that other ECU away?  Cos I got a click from the engine bay and nothing when I nearly fried mine due to poor earth, it was fine a day later. Defo get that longer earth lead though and make sure you clean up the mounting points with a wire brush before you refit!

Edit: The injectors being open constantly is definitely a symptom of a blown ECU.

I still have it and I have one in my car .. and another on the way ! [Is there no way to check them once they are out of the car?]

If the ecu is blown, would the fuel pump still pump cos it didn't when it just clicked ? 

Does anyone know where the second earth wire on the rocker covers goes so I can see if it is loose somewhere

Nope once I got the 'click of death' everything was dead, no fuel pump, no starter no nothing

That little earth wont be causing your ECU to blow thats for sure, I'll have a gander at some wiring diagrams later on to see if I can figure out what its for.

just a recap of what we did to the car the other night.

things i noticed when we tried to crank it was....

dash lights all came on except indictactor lights including the highbeam one this happened only when trying to start not just with ignition on.

fuel in the oil and fuel pump runs none stop.(relay is top left 2nd in jim think it has 80 on it)

sometimes the engine turns about 1/4 but did get it to do a full turn once.

plugs and leads need renewing but seeing as the engine isnt turning over i doubt thats the problem.

all earths and ground leads i could see where good including battery ones and the gearbox one.

starter engaging and trying to turn so not a problem with that.

get the occasional spark from the leads but no pattern just random.

battery needs replacing as it cant put out enough current and had been charged previous.

a new ecu should get the engine sparking and the pump to run right but the engine maybe locked up although im not sure but what would petrol mixed with oil do to an engine even if it isnt starting but just by turning it over with the fuel in there?? dont think its seized as it still moves slightly but could be partially seized making it very stiff.

Whats this about though:

CAUTION-

Floating ground connections will damage the control unit. Check for good clean ground connections at the intake manifold, the cylinder block coolant outlet, and the battery negative (-) terminal.

where do the intake manifold and cylinder block ones appear? Are there loads of earth straps / wires all over the place that may have corroded ?

cylinder block one is the ones on the rocker cover im assuming but that means there is one on the manifold too somewhere :S unless anyone here knows take me a few days but a friend of a friend is an auto electrician and might know.
