Mk 6 Fuel Consumption
« on: 27 December 2013, 09:24 »
Hello. A few months ago I bought an ex-Hertz rental (yes, silly idiot that I am) Mk6 GTI from a main VW dealership. It was 12 months old with 14.5K miles. It appeared to be in very good condition and, although it had obviously been checked over by the dealership I also had it inspected by the AA. No faults found. I have now done 3.5K miles and the car drives beautifully. The only problem is the fuel consumption. On a long motorway run, sticking to the 70 mph limit, I can achieve no better than about 34 mpg. Around town it is easily less than 25 mpg. Overall the consumption has been 29.9mpg, measured by me, or 31 mpg shown on the computer.

I have seen figures of over 40 mpg for motorway driving quoted by some people with the same model. As a result I got another VW dealership to check things, but they told me they could find no fault with fuel consumption and my figures are "about average" for the car.

I have to say that I drive smoothly and efficiently and certainly am not a "boy racer". If the car had been thrashed when hired out by Hertz, could this have had an effect longer term on fuel consumption?

Its really how you drive when I pop round my gf's house its only 1.7miles the car doesn't warm up and my mpg is about 18, and that's driving like an oap. If when the engine is warm on a motorway you sit at 60 you can get about 45-47 I find when you get upto 70 it drops to high 30's, 80 low 30's.. from mine to Cheltenham there a bit of road that I do get my foot down and ill ave about 14mpg. I think for my tank average with a mix of short cold journeys, motorway and town I ave around about 28-32 so same sorta figure as you.

As I read before on here you never buy a GTI for its economy!

My Edi used to return 40mpg just doing my commute, then it would drop to mid 30's around town. I let my wife take it for the day while I cleaned hers and it cam back with 17mpg, WTF!!!!!!

1.Manual or Dsg?
2.Regular or Premium unleaded?

Between 50-60 mph on a steady cruise I would expect to hit 38 mpg, but more is possible.

Journey type (Town/Mixed/Motorway) and Temperature will influence economy figures. At this time of the year the car is taking longer to warm up.

As said in the other section, my average is 30mpg, mainly mix of town, rural driving, with a bit of motorway. About 25-27mpg round town and 34/35mpg on long motorway runs. DSG and Shell Nitro+

My car is DSG. For the first 2.5K miles or so I used Esso Supreme Unleaded (or whatever it is called), but as I thought consumption was lousy anyway and it was costing about 6p a litre more, I decided to use ordinary unleaded. I don't seem to be suffering much more using the cheaper stuff. On the inside of the fuel filler flap it says 95 octane minimum, and that is what ordinary unleaded is.

I've had my Mark 6 GTI DSG for 18 months now and doing 70 - 80mph on the motorway, the best I can achieve is 32 - 35 mpg.

To be honest, I don't think that's too bad. I remember the first car I had a trip computer on was a Renault Clio from about 2006 and, despite being a 1.2, it only averaged 35mpg on motorway journeys.
