I reckon the manual R will still get more to the gallon than that feckin DSG GTI!! :D

Quality issues aside, you never really gave the DSG a chance did you  >:D

Not really tbh, i'll probably get one again someday but in a diesel Passat or similar, if it had been one or two minor annoyances then maybe i'd have gone for it in the R but it was literally driving me nuts! I know that in a manual anything that bothers me (mostly) will be down to me and i can change to put it right but with the DSG i just had to put up with it's foibles! Unless i was caning it in manual which is when i liked it the most i found it really boring, i know the DSG in the R is quicker and alledgedly more fuel efficient (which i'll believe when i see!) but i think i'll enjoy the manual drive more often than not, i know when i'm stuck in traffic on the M6 i'll miss the auto but thats few and far in between.

The R manual will be an awesome beast!

I hope you're going to give us a detailed review of it, as I'm looking at the R as my next car in 2015, but I'll be going DSG again.   It took me a good few months to get used to it but I've had it now on last two GTI's and can't see me switching back. I spend most of my life stuck in traffic

I dont like dsg either. Had the regular use of a mk5 for a few years with it. I got 10% better average mpg with the manual than the dsg version of the same car. I bet thats still the case with the newer ones.

There's no better combination in my opinion when the necessity calls for that sort of car. We did a 130 mile round trip to the coast in the Passat yesterday and it was effortless in every way.

Boring? Probably, but some journeys are just as enjoyable wafting along taking in the scenery.

.........I must be boring then

If you just stick it in Drive the whole time then dsg can be boring, but if you mix it up with regular blasts in manual, you get he best of both worlds imo.

When Auto mode is so good, there is little point in manual mode. The only time I use the paddles is to upshift when I want to, rather than it reving to the red line just because I've got my foot planted.

Auto is good and great for heavy traffic/motorway, but it's not perfect.  It changes up too early (in Drive) and too late (in Sport).  That's why I still want the manual option, so when out on the open road, I can drive as I would a manual, keeping my driving style.  It's easy to lose that if it's just in auto all the time.  It's a bit of a waste to have DSG and never use the paddles.

I bought the DSG Passat because I wanted an Auto. I rarely drive the red Golf ant more, as three pedals and constant stick shifting just feels pointless now. Even my wife is converted after her initial "I'm not driving an automatic. I like being in control" rant.

If I ever feel the need for an interactive driving experience, I'll take the green car. Talking of which and going back to the original point of this thread, it does 32mpg all day long.
