If your on and off the throttle regular thats what kills it.
My commute can upset mine but if I get it right I get silly computer figures haveaseen in the 50s regular lol. Brim to brim tells another story though.
My brim to brim average is 30 to 34 it seems better in the summer. 30 in the winter is more common.
Motorway average was something like 36-38 iirc but I rarely use it for that as I have a tdi that will do 50-55 for those trips.

Mk6 GTI  &  Mk1 GTI
34 years of GTI ownership.

A lot of people including myself buy GTI's for it's all round ability including it's fuel efficiency, the GTI is no rocketship by any stretch of the imagination so if you want outright pace THEN the GTI is wasted, if you want something that will do 40+ mpg on a motorway run but can still make you smile when you kick it's head in then it's car for you.

People that say "why buy a GTI for fuel consumption?" Sh1t me also!

I agree with Jimble some of us cant afford to have 2 cars so a compromise is the only way, when you want to have fun its nice to know you can get your foot down go fairly quick and have a lot of fun, but when you got a 250mile motorway journey its nice to know its also nice and comfortable with a reasonable fuel consumption.

Agree with RocketRoss. If you're looking for 40 plus mpg, surely the GTD would better fulfil this requirement.

I personally don't often do long journeys but its nice to know when you do it isn't gonna cost you the earth. I was looking when I got my GTI at a 325d but didn't want something that sounds like a tank, IMO I don't like the sound of diesels.

Lol.  Says the man that's getting an R.  Hope you're not expecting a regular 40+ mpg with that, think you might be disappointed!
