Id stick a new thermostat, power steering belt and auxiliary belt in as well mate if they've not been done recently. Are you changing the auxiliary tensioner wheel as well as the cambelt thermo tensioner?

i done thermostat other day because of the overheating and all belts look good evan the cam-belt but when a previous owner says "i changed the belt myself out side my flat" gives me no confidence and as its my daily and ofter doing 400 mile weekends to in-laws cam-belt will be re done :D.

So just change all the belts then as other stuff has been covered.

  • Back in a Mk3...
I don't do the water pump with the cambelt, never had one fail on an mk3 and it doesn't need the belt off to replace (then again I'm from Yorkshire so spending money is bad!)

but as said get all the belts swapped over as they really need to come off to sort the cambelt

I've changed 4 mk3 water pumps over the past few years, all worked fine but were noisy / sloppy in operation.

well i have an engine from previous golf had all belts and water pump changed about 3  weeks before i broke the car and has been sitting for about a month so going to use that water pump and belt as nearly new and still in great condition.

Im thinking crank seal as well and maybe reseal sump as think there is a small leak.
