Today I have been quoted 25 weeks for delivery of the following specification:

GTI 3-door DSG Performance Tornado Red

Santiago 19" Alloys
Leather
Winter Pack for Leather
Discover Pro Sat Nav
Keyless Entry
Adaptive Chassis Control
Park Assist
High Beam Assist
Dynaudio
Rear View Camera

List price: £35,000

The winter pack is not worth it as you get heated seats as standard with the leather seats and you have to have headlight washers with xenons by law. The only thing you get is water indicator.

Don't forget the heated washer jets !

I purchased in the first week of October and was quoted 25 weeks.

Got a.call from my dealer this morning confirmed build week is 46 (10.11.2013) so we are way ahead of schedule and he reckons the car could be with us before the new year.

He said that vw have changed their production line and staff scheduling for the last quarter of 2013 to meet huge demand for golfs. There are many others on here who ordered in September and already have their build weeks.

I ordered 18th September, just checked tracker... I'm still on the old 'With Factory'

Based on that price and the waiting time you would be mad not to wait for the R to come out

To get a similar spec R you will be looking at well over £40K , My last R was £43K list ,and not so many deals on them,
as numbers allocated to dealers will be far less than GTI / GTD .
If the new R is as big in the plus department as the GTI is over the MK6 ,and having lived with one for 2 years ,you would
need a new Porcshe Turbo to get to the welsh coast  any faster than the new R  The cross country pace of
the Mk6 R was staggeringly Quick in the real World

It really depends on the starting price of the R. For starters you wouldn't need to spec leather or the Santiagos so there's a couple of K's saved straight away.

Depends on UK spec ,but 3 wheel options ,and 3 Interior options ,possibly 4 if Recaros are added later ,I got the German
configuator on my spec to 55,000 euros !!!!

IMO there's a certain price point above which the GTI just doesn't make sense and that is round about £30k. You start to go over this figure then you entering territory where there are better options.
This.

30k+ then wait for the R

But (and it's a big one) both the S3 and Golf R look as dull as ditch water - the GTI actually looks more 'special' than either of them.

Don't get me wrong, they are both going to leave a standard GTI trailing, but for me, I'd rather have a well specced GTI than a vanilla spec S3 or Golf R.

The old S3 actually looks better than the new one in my eyes!

S3 is even duller in the flesh than it is in photos!!

And if the Golf R looked like that I'd have held off my GTI order! Perhaps VW should have taken some heed of the photoshops prior to launch.

If I wanted to and could afford to buy a Mark 7, the specification I would want is around £32.5K.  This is for a GTD, to replace my current one (which was the best part of £30K - I didn't get a big discount).  I wouldn't consider an S3 or an R, not least because I'd probably kill myself within three weeks, and they're a bit showy for me (too many exhausts, for example).  I'd also be worried that some lowlifes would break in and steal the keys and make off with it whilst I was asleep.

If I were to change, I don't think I would consider anything other than a Golf, even at that price point.  I'm not convinced by the the looks of the 1 series (sorry, Bear!) and the A3 in a comparable spec (S-line) to the GTD is only available with leather seats, which I refuse to have (if I wanted to sit on a cow, I'd wander down to my nearest field), and it looks too much like an estate car (or bus).  And Audi are even worse than VW at screwing as much money out of you for things that really should come as standard or be much cheaper than they are.

The Golf is a good-looking, (mostly) reliable car.  There's not much wrong with the build quality (rattles aside) and if you're lucky you can find a decent dealer who can service it properly.  Tax is cheap, as is insurance (for me, at least).  It's fairly anonymous, and a bit of an everyman's (or woman's) car.  It's not snobby, showy or pretentious.  In that respect at least, it's still a "people's car".
