With regards to GFV, what I mean is that its only relevant if you keep the car for the full term, which I never do. Also it doesn't reflect what the car is actually worth, just the minimum you could get for it. Normally you will get more selling privately??? Fair enough its nice to know that you have that in the bank but in reality there are loads of different factors to consider when selling the car so it doesn't mean all that much.

My GTD isn't great at all in the snow either...

All I'm saying is try to be objective chaps, yes this is a Golf forum, yes the GTi/D is great, so are other cars.

And if I see any GTI/D's on the road I will wave to you all from far far far infront

And when we pass you every 100 miles we will wave to you when you've stopped to fill up  - again

Oh, In our far nicer cabins with our nice tyres that haven't been shredded after a few thousand miles

Both my mk 5 & 6 GTI's were utter sh1te in the snow/ice and I don't expect the 7 to be any different! So concerns over the 1 series being all over the shop in those conditions are redundant because I wouldn't take either type of car out in that weather! Also, on my M135i test drive it was hammering it down and I was nailing it and I didn't feel even a wobble - car was as planted as any other car. I think if you're sensible in severe driving conditions then three isn't an issue.

Currently averaging 33mpg after 3000 miles so I don't think there is that much difference tbh!

Am not biting on that one

But the BMW leather seats are better by some way and tyres are fine unless you drive like a complete moron.

GFV is based on real value - it's proportionately low as it is a cautious measure of worth but there's no way a 45% GFV is going to equate to 60% real 3 year value. The manufacturers get closer to reality so they can get the monthly payments down on PCP as much as they can to lure the customers in. I'd probably expect 51% p/x on a car with GFV of 46%. I'd also expect a realistic 61% on one with GFV of 56%. With figures like that in mind , the 120d/123d/125d is going to cost me £3k more to run in depreciation. There are cars out there i'd forgo that money to get over the GTD (maybe next gen Audi TT). I wouldn't rather have the BMW on an even standing with the GTD, let alone £3k more.

I do consider more than the GTD, but buying new it seems by far the best value of it's peers all things considered. It's good value new, but poor value as a second hand car - I don't want to be paying 75-80% of RRP for a 3 year old car. With that small differential i'd always buy new. If I had only £15k to spend i'd consider the 3 year old BMW option, but i'd be more likely to pick the Alfa Giulietta for probably 50% RRP on the forecourt and still have the reassurance of 2 years warranty left of the 5 year warranty.

When it comes to my money, I like to spend it wisely and put a lot of consideration into a £26k purchase.

I'll wave at you in my rear view mirror in the snow, but the other 98% of the time, you've got me!
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

There's that many variables over 3/4 years that to me it doesn't mean that much, but everyone thinks differently!

And not with my winter tyres you wont
But I will have refuelled about 4 times before you!

not anti brand at all made a point of being open minded this time around and choose the best car within limits and the long process ended with a MK7 but the thing that ended BMW being an option was seeing BMW being stuck completely on slopes in company car parks and colleagues being unable to get them out of their roads and as these all lease no more than 3 years old.

Understand that MK7 or any car is not going to be brilliant in snow, my quattro gives me no more than some additional ability to keep moving.

Think what gets lost here at times in comments is the fine divides in when stating opinions and that we would be happy with all these cars in reality but you can only have one so you have to point to small differences that swayed you.

the 1.35i was out of my range but would I have been tempted? Absolutely it is a great car and the reasons I used for not choosing a BMW in my price range would have gone out of the window.

Loved seeing everyone getting their cars, including Bills BMW and has pushed aside my mid wait apathy to eager anticipation again -

Mine was due in stock early October, that has been put back by 3 weeks due to parts shortage (not ordered camera) - Ordered mid May.

Only information have so cannot give any further details though I personally expect that to be delayed some more as that is the track record

This is company lease so not overly bothered as happy to keep driving my present around but just another example of how poor VW have been in getting these out to customers.

Rob: I just find it the most complete package. If it had 125D performance then it'd be even better, i'd potentially pay a grand more for another 40PS and maybe the other PP stuff. I really do think that outright performance apart, the Golf is a better car than the 1 series.

Really not keen on Leon styling inside or out and their lower RRP but lower residuals make those initial savings a false economy anyway - if you care about such things (as I do).

Can someone answer me this question? Has BMW resolved the rear wheel drive and adverse weather performance or is that just being ignored when anyone reviews them and focusing just on the obviously good performance it can deliver.

Reason I say this is the company car park in last few winters when snowed has had many a stuck BMW and there is even colleagues who have left cars at home in these conditions and state that would never order one again.

Know it does not snow all the time, but descriptions of 'fun' in wet also is something I really would not personally be seeking.

In those conditions RWD needs winter tyres. Most cars would benefit from a decent set of winter tyres in adverse winter conditions.

FWD has an advantage in these conditions because the weight of the engine sits over the drive wheels aiding traction.
