Auto Glass, useless with classics
« on: 25 July 2013, 16:19 »
I had a bit of an incident a few weeks ago where a stone came straight through the windscreen of my old Beetle. I did a bit of looking around and worked out that the cheapest option was to claim on the Insurance.
I phoned Autoglass and told them what car it was and that it is a 1967 model and that they would need to bring a new chrome strip as the original got bent out of shape when I removed the screen at the side of the road.
Over a week later the "technician" arrived and guess what, no chrome strip.
I told him that VW Heritage has them in stock, he went off to sort it.
10 days later I had heard nothing so I tried to ring, (on hold for 20 mins) eventually I got through and they said that they were trying to order the bits from VW but were struggling.
A bit of arguing occurred, mainly around me insisting that VW wouldn't be able to get bits for a 46 year old car and they had to go to VW Heritage.
Another Phone call where they told me that they couldn't deal with VW Heritage but they were working on it.
So today I phoned to cancel the whole thing but they said that they had managed to source the bits but it will take 10 days to get them.

I wish I hadn't bothered and just bought the bits myself, it is only saving me £19 by going through the insurance.

Autoglass have assured me that they are the experts and know what they are doing. Unfortunately though when it comes to classics I don't think they have a clue.

I wouldn't mind but the bit are readily available and I told them exactly what to buy and where to get it. By the time they sort it the car will have been off the road for 6 weeks

Rubbish

Well if you will drive old aircold rubbish, what do you expect, eh?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight for 2-10 people? PM me.

They haven't replaced the screen yet, I am still waiting.

They are paid by the insurance company to repair the damage including any trim or seals.

I personally think your making a big fuss over nothing.
Its a 1960's car. They are not going to have that sort of stuff sitting on a shelf.

Learn from your mistakes  :lipsrsealed:

Well thanks for the support.

As I said all of the parts are readily available, I told them what they needed and where to get it from, its not even expensive (£90)

It has been 6 weeks since it happened and I still have no word from Autoglass about a fitting date.

Maybe I should learn from my mistakes and not get a stone chip again.

You aint learning.

The lesson is. If you buy a classic car, you're better off repairing it your self or sourcing parts for a professional to fit.

as with most companies though, they will have an approved list of suppliers. at work when ever were designing stuff in our material take off's we have to state manufacturer, and that manufacturer has to be on an approved list otherwise we could say get it from somewhere like wilkos and it turns out to be alot cheeper and possibly crap and not up to standards.

they may have spent weeks checking out this supplier and trying to get them onto there approved list just for you.

I agree that 6 weeks is a long time, but tbh I think autoglass are right robbing bastards.

on my old car I didn't have windscreen cover included so rang up autoglass said I have a chip (which was huge) they said they would come out and try and fix it with the resin for about £60, if pumping the resin in made it crack I would have to pay the £60 and then pay another £400 for the windscreen to be replaced!!

rang up a lad my cusin knows he said he would comeout try fix the chip or £30 if it cracks I wouldn't have to pay that £30 and he would replace the windscreen for £190. once he got out and reasised I was his mates cousin he said £15 for the chip if it cracks £90 for the windscreen. and that was done the next day! (however im sure he would have the same problem autoglass had as a mk4 golf is alot more common than a 50 year old car)

and +1 on what tweed said.
