turned her on this morning before work and the engine is making a weird whirring sound.. so I decided not to drive it today. anyone know what it is? the dipstick seems a little lower in the last few weeks but nothing major, it still has plenty in, and I topped it up today.

here's a video..

welcome to the joys of owning a golf. My car made a similar noise for only one day

I changed the oil right away and have not heard it since...

Here's the link:

Apologies for it being pitch black and the use of profanity at the end...(thought that was the end of the car...)

There should be a thread: the sounds that mk3 golfs can make...:)....bet it would be popular...

It is also a dragon green car...I've been told that this is an unlucky colour by a recovery man and a mechanic......

It may be that you have put too much oil in...as i had done?..(I was putting 4L in a 1.8 where I should've been putting a little less than that..)

Anyway just do an oil change and hope it goes away....worked for me...

My valver has made a plethora of odd noises since I've owned  it.  Cam belt tensioner (this made a very similar sound to yours)   water pump bearings (this sounded like a blowing exhaust) worn power steering and auxiliary belts (f**king irritating noise)

Horrible noises aside,  that ISV breather hose needs attention as it's collapsing everytime the engine speed rises.

plethora.. that's a good word!

had a nosey last night and the cambelt is a lot slacker than it should be.. so I'm guessing cambelt tensioner! did you need a new one or did it just need re-tensioning? (don't know much in this area..)

good thing I decided not to drive it then! phew...
