With all the electronics on modern cars and the fact that they can't just be fixed by changing a 20p resistor that has failed so you have to spend £300 on a new unit then I'd not really want to run one without some kind of warranty, even a third party one.
If the £300 odd for a warranty includes full breakdown cover with home start etc it isn't that bad value. And if you sell the car privately it goes with it and would aid a sale no end.
