Do the fans come on? There's a video on YouTube to check if working on both speeds

Any chance you got a link to the video?

Right, so done this test, and the fans don't come on. I also earthed the sensor that's on the inlet manifold, and I can hear the relay in the fan switch under the expantion tank clicking, and the fans twitch but they don't come on. What's wrong with it?

Well then if thats the case i think you'll be needing a new radiator fan.

or this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-MK3-2-0-Intermotor-Coolant-Temp-Warning-Switch-Radiator-Cooling-Fan-/230873353786?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AVW%7CModel%3AGolf%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+III&hash=item35c11fce3a

But i think your fan motor has gone bust. Try the switch first its cheap to replace, but if that doesen't solve it, then its defo the fan motor

Also there's only one fuse in the fan control unit. Is that normal?

I don't know if it's for 8V or 16V, but it should be same for both.

On second thoughts it can't be the switch, becuase your giving direct live to the fan motor and if they ain't working then you have problems with the fan motor, which is prob burnt out.
