Gearbox help
« on: 04 February 2013, 19:58 »
My 99 mk4 agu. Has thought it would be nice to blow the diff through the gearbox. So I'm wanting to know what box will fit my car without too much work? I'd like to put a 5 speed diesel box on if possible how much work is involved ? Cheers Danny

Surely a tdi box is going to geared far too long especially in 4th and 5th?

i thought this, but a mate of mine has a mk2 g60 with a mk3 diesel box and it transforms the car, i find 3rd,4th too short in the mk4 standard box thats all :)

Id just do a bit of number crunching first, with an 02j tdi box you get a 3.3 fd with 0.74 ish 5th gear. With a standard wheel size it puts a 70mph at 2k rpm vs 3.2k for an agu box.

At 2k you really wont have any torque at the wheels at that sort of ratio. It just seems that tad too long.
Just food for thought. There be a box out there with good ratios for what you want.

Pretty sure the calculations have been done before Danny and it's worked out that the diesel gearing would be sh!te in a 1.8t. There was a thread on here recently about swapping a 6 speed diesel box into a 1.8t and when the sums were done 5th/6th were going to be no good.

Naa I don't think 3rd and 4th are long enough mate 3rd should be 115, 120 :) and then top out in 4th, not gonna bother now as I don't want it to be doing 2k at 70mph I'd want it doing about 2800 in a perfect world haha
