Go for an ED35...you will never look back...
Did you have a GTI before your edition?

I've driven an R and in a straight line there isn't much in it standard but it corners like a beast imo, i would get a DSG R if the deal was right.

I liked the MK6 and had it for just under 2 years and when the ED35 was launched, I just thought it was another MK6 with a few interior changes and extra BHP, however it is quicker off the mark and handles better in the wet and the corners. I also think it looks better than the standard GTI and can't wait until the ED40 comes out....

Yes I have a MK6 before the ED35 and would say it's a different car to drive..

In what way? I'm not being funny btw.

I had two Gti's (MK 5's) before my R, and they may look similar but are completely different to drive.

The R is in a different league with it's traction, and feels completely "planted" on the road.  You can floor it out of side roads and roundabouts compared to the scrabbling tyres of the FWD GTi.

The downside is it feels heavier and not as nimble (and perhaps fun) around the twisties.

Is it worth the extra £'s over a GTi ?  .. well that's down to you to decide in the end     but in IMHO it is.

As an aside the R is one of the best cars at the moment for holding it's value, so if you find a good deal you should'nt lose too much in depreciation.

Isn't it exactly the same suspension/brakes as the GTi so that surely can only be tyre choice?

IMO now is probably the best time to jump into an R. Get one that is still in warranty and it will be a bargain as they have already gone through a big chunk of depreciation. I was lucky enough to find one under two years old with just 5k miles on the clock and bought it for over £13k less than the original price that the first owner bought it for. Some R's just out of warranty are over £15k cheaper than new!

Quite a few people I know have jumped from MKV GTI's and don't regret the decision at all. It is a completely different animal to the GTI. The grip is superb, it handles better, it stops better and it goes better. The only downside is fuel consumption, which in real terms is probably 3-5mpg less than a GTI.

It is also a much better base platform to modify from if you are into making your cars faster. Once you reach a certain level of tune with the GTI you end up losing the extra power through wheelspin and power understeer, the R doesn't. Conservatively my R is over 350bhp and I can use every last one, try that with a GTI - especially from a standing start and you will just lose traction completely. In the wet it is the same, I can STILL use every last horsey that the car has and the GTI simply cannot.

Don't get me wrong, the GTI - both MKV and MKVI are great cars and in the dry on a windy country road they are fast and safe, but how many dry days do we get in the UK nowadays?

Sold an Edition 30 (which I loved) to buy my R and my wife sold her Polo GTI to buy an Edition 35.  I drive the Ed35 around all week (I don't work and she walks to walk ) and I drive my R at the weekend.  The Ed35 is a very very nice car, but the R beats it all ends up, there is no real comparision.  The R feels quite a bit quicker (but may not be?), it sounds better, it looks better, it's more planted on the road and the traction is awesome in comparison.  All IMHO, of course.  Money aside, the R is a clear winner for me, I love it.
