If running costs aren't much of a factor, the R is better all round. To be fair the GTI isn't that much better on fuel anyway if you drive it properly!

It is - I've had both and difference seems to be around 8 mpg for town driving [Not done anywhere near as much mileage in R as I had done in GTI when I traded, so might not be a fair comparison though]
On my commute home from work in summer in the R I was getting about 17mpg [all stop/start driving and engine not bedded in at that point]

That's a bit of a worry.  Could well consider a mk7 R as my next car (if it's any good and not for 3 years) but wouldn't want to see the mpg drop below 20mpg.  Do loads of town driving in traffic and get on average 24mpg for that type of driving with the GTI.  Fuel economy not my primary concern but getting sub 20mpg would be pushing it.

It may seem like a dull question, but why have an .:R if you spend most of your time in town?

I do spend a lot of time in town but also do a big chunk of drivng on rural twisties (as well as dual carriage/motorway way stuff).  Having had 2 mk 5's and now a mk6 GTI, and fancying a bit more power and traction, the R may the next logical move.  For more power, could map the GTI but my boyfriend (who is not into cars at all) would be worrying about invalidating warranties etc and I'd never hear the end of it if it went wrong!  So need a car that can be kept stock but will give me a bit more.  Still only just got the mk 6 so a long way off.

Coming from an S3 to an Ed35 has had it's down points. The S3 was more solid in the corners as you'd expect, I'm sure it's the same with the .:R. Unless I'm having a proper tare around which is rare I don't miss the extra power and 4wd. Was very close to getting an .:R but far from disappointed with the Ed35.
You'll enjoy whatever you choose.. it's a Golf

Lots of love for the R in this thread   Just echoing what's already been said really - it's a great car and would still be my pick of the three performance Golfs simply because of the lack of drama when driving hard and fast. Impressive as that is, I think there is more satisfaction to be had from the challenge of driving a front wheel drive GTI/Ed35 cleanly through your favorite corners.

Dubber36, it is, but I'll answer it. Because at the moment I have to go to work every day. The R is my early retirement present and I'm hoping to start getting full use out of it starting this summer.  :smug:

But that apart, what's wrong with having an R even if most of your driving is town? The car looks fantastic and is a joy to own and drive in any situation. You can't really use the full potential of a high performance car on public roads anyway - unless you want to get locked up. A nice run over the A57 [Snake Pass] on a quiet weekend is interesting though.

I get the whole "nice car" thing Rick. If all goes to plan, I'll be able to afford a nice car in a couple of years time.
