Golf R owners :)
« on: 02 February 2013, 15:28 »
Hi guys,

I currently have a mk6 gti, abseloutly love the car but seen a golf r for sale at a very good price local to me, have any of you R owners previously owned a gti then moved onto the R?

Is it worth the change?

Thanks
Luke

Depends if you are going to mod or not IMO, the Golf R with 4wd and DSG makes for a ridiculously fast car as Hurdy has proven with basic bolt on mods

Ed35 offers middle ground but not enough difference to change from a GTi IMO.

I wouldn't be changing a GTI for a 35 either. It's too subtle to be special enough coming from a GTI. I'd save a bit longer and look at the Mk7 GTI later in the year.

The .:R on the other hand, would be worth changing to, as it is a noticeable step up.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

The r is in a different league to a gti and an edition 35 so certainly worth the change. I have a 35 and my mate has an s3 and the difference the 4wd makes is ridiculous. I cant really use 1st or 2nd without lighting the wheels up where as he can hardly get the wheels to spin. Much less understeer as well makes it feel like its on train tracks going round a corner.

Go and have a proper test drive and then you will see.....

Did you have a GTI before your edition?

I've driven an R and in a straight line there isn't much in it standard but it corners like a beast imo, i would get a DSG R if the deal was right.

i wouldnt swap the GTI for either the ed35 or the R. a lot of extra money for not a lot of difference.

if i were looking to 'upgrade' i would be looking elsewhere, not at another golf.

dont know what age/milage your GTI or the R your looking at are but i bet it would be a hell of a lot of money to change. is it worth all that extra cash for what ultimately would feel like the same car after the novelty had worn off?

bear in mind the mk7 is shortly due out. cant see the point in swapping a perfectly decent mk6 for a more expensive slightly 'better' mk6 when a totally new model is imminent,

Problem is you have to weigh up a new r wont be out for near 12 months thats a lot more depreciation on his car, mk6 gtis are fetching reasonable money at the moment where as people are not going to want them for decent money in 6 months time. He will also get a pretty good value golf r vs £35k plus for the mk7 r.....and a much lower px price.

The car is a different drive all together and worth considering you certainly cant compare a stock gti to an r.
