I've now had 4 MK5 GTI's inc an Edition 30 and Pirelli and I've just had a Golf R.

Although the Golf R is still standard (not for long) it pisses over any other Golf I have owned (inc MK5 R32). It's not just about how quick it is, or how quick it can go round corners, it's about the way the car makes you feel, and in this case the R makes me feel EPIC!

Yes it's quick and has great traction, but it also comes loaded with really high spec as standard and the cabin and controls feel far better than either the MK5 or the MK6's I have driven.

Fuel consumption wise, the worst I have had so far on my commute is 27mpg, and the best is 32mpg, so not all bad!

Snake pass is one of my favourite roads on the UK

I don't agree that an R will piss on a GTI if both cars are std, however different story if mapped. Yes the R is the better car but in std trim is not worth the extra over an ED35 as the performance on the road is very similar even if the drive is different. Depends what you want out of a car as others have said the GTI although still heavy is lighter and more chuckable and more fun as a result. i have driven the R a few times on my usual routes and just prefer the GTI (just my opinion). The R needs more power and should have 300+bhp minimum from the factory to make it worth the extra outlay and if I owned one I would definitely map it to make use of the better brakes and 4wd. I have owned 3 Audi quattros so completely get the advantages of 4wd so am not knocking the R.

However one negative side of the R is a smaller boot and is an issue for me as we use the GTI for family road trips around Europe. I have two teenage sons so effectively four adults and need to take enough stuff for two weeks. That extra bit of boot space means I can bring back a few cases of wine without having to fill the car with bags from the boot or having to use a roof box
Current: GTI Edition 35 Candy White 5dr DSG 19" Glendale, RCD510+DAB, Dynaudio, Storage Pack, Parking Sensors

Gone: Edition 35, GTI Mk6, Edition 30, GTI Mk4, GTI Mk3, GTI Mk2 and my favourite the UR quattro
For those that dont know DSG is an electronically controlled dual-clutch multiple-shaft manual gearbox

It may seem like a dull question, but why have an .:R if you spend most of your time in town?

Dubber36, it is, but I'll answer it. Because at the moment I have to go to work every day. The R is my early retirement present and I'm hoping to start getting full use out of it starting this summer.  :smug:

But that apart, what's wrong with having an R even if most of your driving is town? The car looks fantastic and is a joy to own and drive in any situation. You can't really use the full potential of a high performance car on public roads anyway - unless you want to get locked up. A nice run over the A57 [Snake Pass] on a quiet weekend is interesting though.

Amen to that.

I live 5 mins from the Snake Pass and now it has had the rough bits attended to it is even more episode a ride than before!

Gonna be shooting our video footage there John - I'll look out for you
