Is my thermostat broke????

my gti was ticking over for a few minutes when thie top radiator hose blew off, emptying the coolant all over the engine. The pipe that came off is the big 1 from centre of the water flange. it has snapped the lip clean off inside the hose so ther no way the hose can go bak on. has this happened because its a really old part or because of a problem with thermostat  ??

did your take a long time to get up to temperature?
did your car temperature ever go over 90 just before this happened?

i had been driving for maybe 15 minutes so temp was in middle of gauge wer it has never gone over before, i wasnt in the car when it happened it was ticking over maybe 10 yards away assoon as i herd the water and seen the steam i cut it out and pushed the car some wer safe, ineed to get car hom realy but cant run it till fixed :@

could the car be strartd and drove maybe 100 yards like this my theory is yes because it wont b hot enough to need water by time im cutting it out, i need to get it home asap is this going to nakker my engine??

They break, especially cheap ones.
Both plastic flanges are about a tenner a pop, change them both

Wouldn't really start it as all water left in the engine will come splashing out 
If it is only 100 yards then first just drain all so it doesn't splash about everywhere.
