Best recovery option?Any help
« on: 25 November 2012, 17:59 »
As my Golf (and my Passat) are now more than 17 years old, I found that my trusty insurance company now want an arm and a leg for coverage (over £200).

I don't have any coverage at the moment and my daily commute is littered with vehicles of a much younger age stranded by the side of the road...BMW's more common than others for some reason.:)

After going over a serious pothole I was lucky and continued on, but the vehicle behind me did not..Could have easily been me...

I have been searching around for a good deal, but found most of the companies will tow you to the nearest garage.

I prefer to have the car towed home as garage repairs will be expensive, but after I talked with them over the phone, they always tow to the nearest garage..or the recovery guy will tow it to their garage, regardless of the time and say they will fix it ASAP.

I have looked on the websites and AA offer nationwide recovery plus they cover repairs at the garage (£35 pound deductible) for about £150. Seems very piece of mind, but quite expensive. or national recovery for £80.

Other companies offer roadside assistance and recovery to a garage for about £40-60. First Call GB seem the cheapest..at over 40, I

Just wondering what you guys yourselves have and what is the best option.

I realise that many banks now offer this...so maybe I will look into it with Lloyds...

But in the meantime it would be good to get some advice..

Thanks!

And yes I have used the search option,,but it was not really useful..

I've never had a problem with the AA apart from finding £135 every year
Still a tow will cost you most of that if you didn't have it.

I bank with lloydstsb, for 7quid a month I get AA cover and mobile phone insurance.
I have used the AA once when my head gasket blew on my old BMW, they were as good as gold.

I get a similar deal with Barclays. Get full breakdown cover with RAC, onwards travel, home start, the works.

It's worth noting that the policy covers me (even as a passenger) , not a car so the age of the car is irrelevant

That lloyds option sounds good, when I check the webpage I cannot find it. I just see it tacked on to the Silver, Gold and ect accounts...is that what you meant?

When I had my MK2 valvoliner, a drive belt broke. Called the RAC and the dickhead jacked the car up on the plastic cill trim/side skirt.

He looked so confused when I said 'you're meant to open that pocket to reveal the jacking point'.

He said 'I always do it like this'.

Never gone back to the RAC. Nob end.

For the alternative European option go to ADAC for about £70 per year and be covered for all of Europe and have the AA come out to your car.

adac.de - call the number in the day and ask for Petra, bitte.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

It's the silver account that I have. As Dom said it covers me as a passeger also.

My mrs banks with Lloyds so gets the AA cover, only used it once when the clutch arm snapped on my mk2. He was going to attempt a roadside repair but I asked for him to tow me home instead which he did, even helped to push it into my garage for me.
