modding 16v airbox
« on: 06 November 2012, 22:33 »
I have bought a spare 16v airbox for my ABF with the hope of getting a good cold air feed upto it.  I have removed all the gibbons from the bottom of the box.  I now have cut the air intake and now have a 65mm hole in the bottom off the box. Is that enough with a cold air feed? I'm going to remove the top tapered intake pipe and either bellmouth it or else cut it back.  What do I do with the wee sensor on the side of the airbox, the one with the brown and black pipes. Can I blank them and remove the sensor.

I have read the toyotek thread, but just not sure on cold air feed sizes..

Blanking plate over the warm air intake opening and remove the vacuum piping from the side.  I also took out the connection points  and filled the holes with rivets.

Tremendous idea...
Open up a sealed and insulated airbox beathing cold air, and let the engine ingest as much hot air as it likes, what with air taking the path of least resistance and all.

Hacked about airbox = lots of noise.
Hot air = de-tuning.

the cut is on the cold air side away from the engine, and it didn't make any change to noise for me for some reason.. anyhoo i have a cone and shield now

Go measure the temperature in the engine bay whilst you are driving - you'll find the temperature near the engine, and on the wing side of the airbox, are pretty much the same. Warm/hot.

I'm surprised it didn't give some noise...it usually does.

You have an opn cone now?
With a heatshield?

I have 80mm cold feed. I cut a hole in the box then used the top part trumpet to put on the hole (cut down) so I could seal it with silicone and have something to fix the 80mm hose to.

yeah you're probably right about the air temp thing.. it was stock filter maybe that's why no noise. yeah got open k+n filter now with a 2mm steel heat shield (no insulation at the mo) and a couple of cold air feeds comin up from the bumper. might make a new shield tho cos it's a bit gappy around the edges so I think it's lettin some hot air through

Bad idea opening up the airbox. Glen knows why.

You'll see why in Feb 2013.
