In the 2.5 years I've had mine my DPF light has never come on though I've heard the fan running a couple of times after I switch of which generally means it doing a regen. I only do short journeys but I give it a blast up the motorway now and then.

If you have VCDS you can check the ash content and see when it last did a regen.

You can do a Diesel Particle Filter Emergency Regeneration

Cheers Keith

Unfortunately I don't have a VCDS cable to check this.

I have now got it booked in at another dealer on the 15th which is still too long to wait but if it happens again, I'm ringing VW assistance.

Car was in the garage today to investigate the DPF issue.

Two issues identified: -

Engine had ~ half litre too much oil in it  was serviced back in May and I've not put in any since - must have been at service time

The engine is also showing a fault code but they don't know what this fault is as its not in their system  so they have sent it to VW to find out more!

On a more positive note, the car felt better on the way home - must be better not pushing that 500ml of oil around!

Well the car has been running rough for a couple of months with MPg at a woeful 35-38.

It has been back in but no fault found.

Car went in just before new year for its first MOT and is now out of warranty. Whilst in I asked them to check the car due to the economy and rough idel etc.  They told me they couldn't find any fault and TBH since then the car has been running so much better! Coincidence or did they tinker I wonder?

Drove down to Leicester this morning to pick up my new mountain bike and it's ~85 miles each way. On the way back whilst still on the motorway, after covering a total of 150 miles the DPF light has come back on.

Following the bl00dy useless handbook guide to get the fault to clear didn't work so car is now two weeks out of warranty.

I'm ringing the garage tomorrow but wondering should I go via VW Assist (or whatever it's called) as I know my garage won't have a hire car for weeks and this needs sorting :(

Forgot to say, the guy at VW when I took it in for MOT said it might be a fault sensor but their tests didn't show anything - wonder if it is an intermittent fault and I can get them to swap it out and see how it goes (under warranty hopefulyl as this was mentioned back in October and just before it expired)

Bugger

I'd bet on it being a sensor not the dpf at that mileage.

This.  Or it could be like a customer of mine whose throttle body had failed, was stuck open and eventually clogged up his DPF......even though I told him weeks ago to replace the throttle body   Although when that happened, he started having the engine management come on prior to the DPF light coming on

Looking back through the thread, did you ask them what fault code it had come up with? :undecided:

Hi

I asked them the code (it wasn't one they were familiar with) and VW Tech came back and said it was a "ghost code" and nothing to worry about!

I've had no warning lights come on other than this one today so I'm leaning to it being a sensor issue, particularly as it wouldn't reset after the 5 mins at 70kmh in the manual.

Any thoughts on which sensor it might be? Wouldn't mind giving them a big hint when I ring up tomorrow

On the PD engines it was commonly the pressure sensor fitted near the bulkhead.  That's about £50 but must be fitted and adapted BEFORE driving off otherwise the sensor will not work
