Long commute in a track prepped car
« on: 23 August 2012, 14:32 »
I have a track prepped mk4 and whilst I've commuted in the past it was only from SE London to Reading but next week I have an interview in Cumbria which works out as a 600 mile round journey. Earmuffs are not permitted and whilst I could have one ear piece in to listen to some music from my iphone I question it's effectiveness.

I've set the damping on a relatively soft setting but the wishbones etc. rose jointed I only pray the roads are forgiving in and around Cumbria. Are there any local members that can comment on the road surface in the surrounding area?

Hell man, I commute up and down the M6 and surrounding roads in my Mk4. Its a similar spec to yours but have you removed the sound deadening?
The roads as far as I am aware are okay though I am not quite that far north (I am at the level of Preston!).

I don't know what you have done to your mk4 and I assume the same can be said of my mk4 but essentially I still have part of my dashboard but no heater matrix so I have some rather large holes in the bulkhead into the engine bay so it gets pretty loud. And with part of the dash missing there's also going to be no headunit or anything of the sort in the car to drown out the noise.

The custom tubular wishbones don't have bushes and the solid top mounts provide most of the vibration so I've tried to set the damping on the bilstein b16 pss9 to a softer setting but they just weren't designed for comfort in mind.

Where abouts in Cumbria are you going? M6 and a66 are generally ok, they soon get rough when you leave them though!

Yours is a bit further on than mine now! Ouch, that is gonna be some 600miles. Personally, I would get the train and a hire car as you may not be able to hear the questions when you get to your interview! hehehe.

Carlisle. Google maps suggests it to be 335 miles each way. Migraine galore it seems and the only form of entertainment I have is watching my coolant expansion tank fill up as the coolant expands (the expansion tank and other bits have been relocated inside the cabin for weight distribution)

If google map is accurate I would have to be on the road from 3am, I'm also worried after the drive I won't be in the best of moods or most talkative. But at the same time I take comfort in the knowledge that my car is close by whenever I'm away from home - sort of a piece of home.

Drive up the day before and stay in a travel lodge.

No point going if your going to be like that
I often wonder why people never expect sarcastic comments from me - they're the only reason I speak...

I live 5 minutes from Carlisle, half way inbetween carlisle and penrith, right on Southwaite services. Main roads are good, none main roads are hellish!! Carlisle itself is smooth but with many road works at the minute. Where is it your going in carlisle?

Roads in carlisle will be fine, you'll be on the m6 right up to carlisle anyway. It's when you get further west into Cumbria that the roads get interesting.
