Rebuild or conversion
« on: 12 August 2012, 16:25 »
Hello guys in bit of a dilema .. My 1.8 digi engine is on her last sea horse legs :( my bodywork is preaty mint after being in the body shop! Ive also overhauled complete suspension set up on it as well.. My dilema is do i just fook it and bang a vr6 lump in as the turbo route is to much and you loose so much money... Or do i get my orignal engine rebuilt ?? Both cost sort of the same to do rebuild or conversion... Also ive seen mk2 vr6,s go for peanuts so when i decide to sell would it be beter to sell with the orignal fresh engine ??

Opinion please :)

For me I would source another Digi and do a total rebuild on that engine and dump the old when it finally fails...

This ^.  At least test drive a Mk2 vr6 to see if you like it before committing to a swap.

An ABF in a Mk2 is a pretty good bet

If you want to stick a VR lump in then be carefull as i've recently seen what happens over time to the chassis when you decide to start booting it everywhere. Theres an oak green 2 door with a 2.9 6 pot in my mates garage which ran 14' s dead at Inters last year completley ripped apart inside and is now being stripped for parts.
That said my mechanic at Central VW in Ellesmere Port runs an edition 1 with Subaru turbos and a rolling road of 380bhp as a daily driver. Go figure!! :)

i was in the same situation as you, 176000 miles and even though the engine was still running fine i wanted a bit more power, i decided in the end as i have a run about car i would vr6 the mk2 as i wanted the noise and a bit more power.

i started the vr6 around a month ago and shes coming along planning on 5 months now for completed product as not getting the time.

i'd say if you’ve got the time go for a transplant i didnt think about time, only working 1 day a week on it will take longer than i thought.

at the stage of pulling the engine loom out now LOL

abf would be a good one to go for as well

Thanks for the replys im still undecided tho :( if i went for a vr6 i would let a garage do the conversion im handy with spanners but as you say it will be time and space to do the work!! Which i dont have with a misses and 2 girls and one on the way (soon) hmmmmmm decisions

i would say then get yours rebuilt, besides you have the best gti anyways. i'd be happy with a nice looking/ running standard mk2 than anything else,

ps - excludes r32
pps - audi rs4

ok now i'm dreaming now
