You can't beat original. I'm a bit of a scrooge. I look at VR6, then look at 2.8/2.9 litre, then look at how much fuel is. That's why I stuck with my rebuilt KR 16v.

/\ That was my 1st thought...

Also VERY front Heavy and then you'll need to upgrade brakes etc...

Not a cheap option especially if you're looking to pay for the conversion!!

If you source a good vr6 engine then it's a good bet. They are really solid engines if they have been maintained, if not it can be costly to replace parts. A complete running vr6 corrado is the best doner, then mk3. They can be found for under 1k but check history carefully.

If you are handy with spanners then the actual swapping over of the engines is really easy. I found the bits that took time and are fidly is the wiring, prepping and painting the engine bay, fitting the clocks & pedalbox. None of it is hard, just time consuming.

There are plenty of mk2 vr6's out there where the engine has been thrown in quickly with no thought to upgrading brakes and suspension, they will obviously handle and stop badly! If the car has been upgraded properly and has the correct front springs they handle nicely.

If I drive normally I see 31-33mpg about the same as the 1.8 carb it replaced. Obviously if you floor it eveywhere then you will see 20mpg which isn't great!

The sound is amazing so you should do it!!!

Mine has recently been rebuilt and it was definitely worth it. Luckily my partner did nearly all the work so it wasn't too expensive though (although still a lot of money really)

My golf is now getting brilliant fuel economy and is a lovely drive. It's particularly gotten a new lease of life at the top end - it really gallops up on the motorway (for an owd golf!) and I'm really happy with it.

If possible I'd go for a rebuild then see how you feel - you could always sell on the rebuilt engine later.

As others have said there's suspension and brake upgrades to consider. I have already had mine done in readiness for one day when I hope to go 20vt. Not sure when this day is going to be but I'm sure it's coming!

Personally I don't really understand going for the VR6 option in terms of a swap - heavy and thirsty. There must be better alternatives!

I would see how much an engine rebuild is first then consider an engine swap. Engine swaps do push your insurance right up though.

The best 1.8t to do is the 225bhp BAM lump from S3,TT,Ibiza (£900+ for engine alone) or higher bhp 1.8t lumps that are in newer TT's etc. QPeng have info on all of the 1.8t engines, standard and mapped bhp outputs etc. 1.8t's are good because they are newer engines and they are a bit more eco than the vr6. The BAM lump can be tuned up to 260-270bhp reliably, any more and the internals need to be upgraded. If I had the money at the time I would have gone 1.8t.

The vr6 is a good option because it is so much cheaper than the 20vt conversion and if it is FI 300-350bhp can be achieved with standard internals, plus they sound amazing NA or FI.

1.8t BAM conversion will cost around 2k if you do it yourself. Vr6 conversion can be done for under £500 which is why it is popular.

Cant comment on vr6 because I ve never driven one although most people on here that say they re to heavy blah blah probably haven't either. My mate had one and he loved it and drove it like he stole it on the isle wight. Vr6 mk3 s can be picked up for peanuts nowadays and your gonna get over 170bhp for under 500 quid and a fantastic sound. Rebuild at a garage Ain't gonna get that.
Good luck with it.

I've done an abf conversion. If u have a carrado vr6 u can use that paddle box but u can't use a golf one tho. I found the paddle box the hardy part of my build lol very awquad but like the guy said on before not difficult as such just time consumin. I think it took me a day to swap it over
