Power Steering Pipes
« on: 21 July 2012, 14:48 »
Hi Folks,

Any one know the going price for a set of power steering pipes from Volkswagon? Had a few checks with a few parts traders but they dont have any supply.

Just relised my golf is due its mot in 2 weeks. Got the fuel tank to change over too.

I can probs get a set of pipes from a vr6 but not sure if they fit the 8v.

Does corrosion on the pipes fail now? Anyone know if they pipes come as 2 parts as I know they did with mk3 polo.

Many thanks

Mine were horrendously rusty but after removing them and hitting them with a grinding stone on the end of an air tool and a lick of hammerite they look like new. Takes alot of rust for them to break or leak fluid. There is actually 3 pipes, the two large main ones and a short one that runs across the front crossmember.

Thanks guys, I cans ee the front section pipe has some corrosion on it (not leaking ) - I think as I don't have an undertray the water has done its damage. I will try and wirebrush off and grease it up. I will have a look at the other 2 sections to see how bad they are.

I changed the power steering pipes on my old polo 2 - 3 years back and the pipes came in to sections and VW charged me £250 for it

Sorry this questions is a bit off topic - I am going to change my petrol tank on Friday  - Anyone know if it is a big pain to do it. I will have someone to give me hand.

Thanks guys...much appricated.

Petrol tank is a pain and yes you will need a hand.

Worst bit I found was getting the neck to come out and down as its attached to the tank.

Tanks not too bad to do. Remove the round panel under the boot carpet and remove the hoses and connector from the fuel pump, then there is a bolt up at the top holding the filler neck in position and then you have all the bolts that hold the straps on then it should drop out. Some good ground clearance is essential. Its not too heavy if its more or less empty as its plastic.

One more question - any one knopw if the mk3 vr6 and gti tanks are the same?
