i took them off the other day and i dont think theres a slotted nut ? , should this be the nut which actually holds the top mount on ? , and could this be the problem causing the shock to be so wobbly in the strut , thanks rob

Have you tightened the nut when the car was on the ground not just in the air?
Plus the best way is to get allen key hold it with ring spanner then use a spark plug socket and an adjustable wrench!
You sometimes find you think its tight but it will go afew more turns to stop it moving about!

There is a slotted nut to keep the spring in place and a standard wide nut to keep the rubber mount in place and after that a nut fror the top cap in my pictures together if you are saying you can lift the rubber mount off the shaft then you need a nut big time!!!!

Lets keep it simple when strut is not mounted to car, can any of the parts be lifted off including the top rubber mount?
If yes then you have a nut missing?
Are you sure the slotted nut is tight enough the one that keeps the spring in place?

I think the spring wasn't under compression when the slotted nut was done up thats why he has so much play nothing to do with two nuts being there?
