mk4 Gearbox for 1.8t conversion
« on: 17 May 2012, 13:19 »
Okay so iv bought a AUM 1.8t will all driveshafts gearbox engine and all the rest to do the conversion. Gonna give it a bash and see how i get on.

What i want to know is do you need the ABF gearbox or will the box for the AUM work as the engine also comes with shafts and engine mounts and gearbox, just wondering as may save sourcing the rest of the bits.

Cheers

mk4 box will fit fine 02j is the same physical size as the 02a (dont take this as gospel but im 99% sure its correct), people go for the 02a as the ratios suit the mk3 better in general

brad is using an 02j in his so I'm sure he will be along shortly to confirm :) It may be worth getting another box though depending which 02j one you have as gearbox ratios can make quite a drastic difference to the engine performance
20vt conversion, sig pic coming soon!

Right okay, i did think this.

Its just iv read you need ABF Mounts, Hydro and Box. But seeing as the engine iv bought comes with all this, was hoping they would work as you have confirmed.

Going on this, I do assume that the o2j mounts will be okay then, and ABF will not be needed?

But as youv said, if the ABF is better suited, i'll run that. Or do you run the o2j with a different final drive or something?

Save me going out and buying a doner anyway

Mk3 driveshafts will be fine and the mk4 box will fit, but you will need the mount brackets from a ABF car mate

im switching to a mk4 box which is exact same ratios as the mk3 16v box but I'm swapping final drive out to a VR6 one for longer top end and I'm also fitting the Wavetrac LSD (Expensive)

iv also got Audi TT short shif and MK4 gear selectors which need modification to fit mk3

for easy and simplicity, you would be best just to fit the full 16v mk3 set up. (you could still use your mk4 box, just use the other bits from a ABF - may alos need the Tower from the gearbox of the 02A if u do this

you will need the ABF hydro parts really as the mk4 ones are different shape piping but it could all be made to fit, iv just not done it (the MK3 abf Slave cylinder on the gearbox fits the Mk4 box too)

I think for the simplicity and option of getting some money back, i'll just get a 16v doner then if thats what you recommend.

And sell on the mk4 box try make some money back from that too, thanks for the advice

Or would it be wiser just to buy an ABF box with mounts? Or do you actually need the brackets on the chassis? Just suming up my options
