Welding!
« on: 08 June 2005, 11:24 »
Will my car ever be what i want it to be?!!!!!! Driving me nuts, i know it's 22 years old but some owners have obviously neglected it over time. I've done so much to it since i got it in October. Just had my garage check over bits to be welded. I knew of the rear arch n spare wheel well but they found that the clutch was cuttin through the bulkhead :( God knows what its going to cost me. For some reason though i can't see myself giving up on Douglas!

Anyone else get these doubts about mk1s, there's no car quite like em but that inlcudes the maintanence! Hard work. Well worth. MOT due sept so lets hope its in good shape for then.

Also does anyone know what prices id be looking at for a gear box refurb? Id rather not think about it but it may be in the pipeline so to speak.

Anyway rant over.

Lewis.

It's a common problem is the clutch cable cuttin through the bulk head, mine went on me about 6 months ago and snapped the cable, but it should only be a minor piece of welding, it's where it is that wil be the ballache for them. If possible try to get them to put a rubber washer to feed the cable through so it doesn't snap again when rubbing through the hole. As for the gearbox, I don't know prices but a reconditioned gearbox shouldn't be stupid money, I guess the labour of fitting it will eat most of the cash.  :undecided:

I get miffed with my cabby from time to time but when I see it nice and shiney, clean and running well, I love it.  So just hang in there, you know it makes sense.
......now officially dubless.

If the clutch cable pulls thru the bulkhead there is a modified plate from VW that sticks to the bulkhead to strengthen the area. Check the clutch and cable are good as if they are worn and make the clutch heavy, and this can cause the problem.

Yeh the cars already had a repair plate n even thats gonna have to be replaced and welded properly.  My clutch is as heavy as a very fat person, but assumed all this time that was pretty normal as my mk1 polo use to be the same. Ahh well, bring on the welding. Lucky ive got a spair clutch cable lying about may as well get that replaced at the same time. Then the gearbox, then the oil leak. Then the bubbling. Then the repsray. Where will it end!?!!

I think the main adjustment youre going to have to make mentally is that a mk1 cannot run without regular maintenance and parts- speaking from experience after shelling out over a grand last time it needed work.

Shop around for a welder, i got stung.

Ive had my mk1 a year and still havent even driven it!

Talk about depression, its in the garage with no wheels or even a ream beam on it.

Everytime i complete one job i find something else wrong.
