Would it be legal to...
« on: 23 April 2012, 14:43 »
Would it be legal to push a pit bike with no plates/regs, insurance or mot on the pavement with the engine off of course.

I only need to push it 3miles to my parents and cannot find anything online except to do with us law.

I can't see the harm in it but want to double check, thanks in advance.

Won't fit in the golf, I borrowed a mates corsa with the biggest halfruads trailer for free and it was a foot too small, bikes a bigger thing than I imagined about 6ft long watercooled. I live 15miles away but my old man has more gear and space to work on it and more knowledge on bikes so it seems sensible to take it to his especially when its 3miles away from him.

Wouldn't mind pushing it I'd its legal, I struggled with MTBs in golf let alone this lardy bike

No.

Public highway, in charge of a motor vehicle etc...

Pit bikes especially as they are not road legal (unless you can show me otherwise)

You must have MOT and minimum 3rd Party insurance , etc..

BUT, what are the chances of Daz Poliz being there?

Pffft, just do it. I wouldn't worry about pushing a bike for a short way. You care too much!

What if there's no fuel, no oil and no means of starting it up as its already been drained? Surely there's no intention of it being used and then its technically not a vehicle as it becomes no different than an old persons trolley bag or a pram?

Just see on yahoo answer from 4 years ago:

But your the lawyer, I'm in met police territory so the odds of see one of the 50k police officers is likely especially in day light when they are bored

Its perfectly legal to push a motorbike on a pavement as long as the engine is off. It doesn't matter about the fact it has no insurance, mot etc.

Only becomes an offense if the engine is on or its left unattended. Just make sure you actually push it and not sit and free wheel it.

There used to be an old wives tale that if you removed the spark plug from a scrambler, you could get away with such an action.  This is wrong.

Regardless of it's condition, you will be deemed to bit in control of (charge of) a motor vehicle on the Public Highway (that includes the pavement)

Being a pit bike, you'd be in even sticker territory as they are not designed for, not classed for, on road use.

You'd have to bend over and take it twice, if caught.

But it's only 3 miles.

This is incorrect.

The biggest risk is that you'll look at right pikey.

Do you want that?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
