Innotec turbo clean - after use issues?
« on: 11 March 2012, 21:07 »
So. Been experiencing the car going into soft limp in 4th on the boost and after hunting around here, best guess was a sticky turbo.

Ordered up the cleaner and finally manned up enough yesterday to do it. After the process seemed fairly easy and the not so easy reassembly of pipework the car -

Struggled to fire up and then when it did it ran lumpy, blowing blue oily smoke. Then when I fed in some throttle it started to "diesel" and off the revs went. I killed the car, struggled for it to fire up, but when it did it ran sh!te for a bit, then was fine. Drove it nice and easy and all fine. Hammered up the road and all fine - no longer sticking in 4th and pulling really well through the revs and on boost.

Hadn't touched it all day today, but had to nip out for some fuel. It struggled to start and was a bit clattery, ran rough and then seemed to sort itself out. No issues with some more fuel in it and now seems fine.

Question is - after this treatment should you change the plugs? I know from redex on a bike they need changing and the stuff for the filter seemed a bit like it.

Any help - muchas appreciated!

Loads of success stories on here and it made a shedload of difference to the car.

I'm just hoping the smokiness today was some left over residue burning off.

Strange really, as the fluid is going near any sort of 'engine part'? As it all shots out the exhaust right? Ran for any fault codes? If it is running lumpy you may have disconnected the pipework back together incorrectly/loosely and or have a slight boost leak? :undecided:

Had no problems when I done mine and it sorted out the over boost issues.
What plugs you on about changing? Did you use all the turbo flush after the cleaner?
I often wonder why people never expect sarcastic comments from me - they're the only reason I speak...

Glow plugs? First diesel I've had so excuse if it doesn't have any - 110 ASV engine.

Yep followed all the instructions - blocked it off with the card, filled it up with 1, then left to soak and used all of 2 to clean it out. It's all gone back together how it came off and it only runs lumpy on initial warm up.

I'll see what it does this morning and report back. Hope nothings wrong as the run home on Saturday was incredible! Really did make a difference.

been to see Roy at autobarn quickly this morning.

He thinks and also what I was half suspecting that the diesel filter cleaner has freed up some crap and moved it into the system, so hopefully after a run with a new tank of fuel it should blow it through.

managed to get it into limp mode though in 5th pulling on the boost and MPG seems to be down by about 8MPG - normally get close to 50MPG on the run into basingstoke - 20 miles all A roads and this morning only achieved 40mpg.

We shall see! Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated - on startup, it was lumpy and clattery and ran like a bag of nails for about 2 minutes - after driving down the road half a mile it seemed back to its smooth tractorey self.

Right.

Been to see a mate who is fairly sh1t hot.

Looking at it, I seem to have cocked up the cleaner and possibly put it in the wrong side of the turbo. :lipsrsealed:

So the 2 things he has suggested that the clattery start may be.

1. A bent rod, lowering the compression. From what he has said and explained, this could make sense, but the car isn't misfiring and once warm runs absoloutely fine, no issues. The boys here reckon I would know if I have bent a rod too.

2. One of the glow plugs is fouled and not starting one of the cylinders / getting warm enough to fire. This would make sense too as the guy I rent desk space off of, has snapped a plug before in a diesel golf. Runs all clattery, billowing out smoke, but then warm is fine.

What seems more likely? Can understand that it would be a rod, but doesn't seem severe enough and it only does it from cold.
