get yourself the basic Haynes manual.... Before you go any further..

I've just got the restoration manual but you need to know the BASICS before you tackle the bigger stuff and for that you need the normal one...

You can pick one up for peanuts... worth it's weight in Gold...

Anything else come and ask on here, after doing a search 1st of course....

Nahhhh Waste of time I did one years ago and learnt very little... Yeah the basic's of every car are the same BUT when it comes to sorting out a running issue with a particular car then it's down to specialised knowledge...

I can strip an Interior, Exterior and a full loom from a mk2 in 3 days - but finding a mechanical fault when you don't really know what your doing can take days.... So I still take my car to a friend of mine who is a MK2 Mechanical Guru...

Some good points made here... After helping my dad fix some of his cars as a youngen my very first golf was my main teacher.  The best way to learn is to tackle each problem yourself first with guidance from others when required.  As said, first point of reference is the proper haynes book for a lot of things although even with the book it can sometimes be hard to make sense of it to an untrained eye.

The Haynes modifying books aren't that great to be honest and certainly no good for fault finding and maintenance.

that's a good shout, my uncle is pretty good with car mechanics, I might enlist his help and become his 'apprentice' hehe, I'll go over the haynes manual a few times and try and get the hang of it,

I really bought the modifying manual more for 'reverse engineering' as I reckon the lad who owned the car before me has done just about every mod in it to my car, I was hoping working the opposite way would make getting rid of his modifications :)

We're all a helpful bunch in the Mk2 section. Don't be afraid to ask what you may think is a silly question.

We've all been where you are with your first car/Golf.

Everyone will have an opinion on the MK2, but remember it's your car and you can do whatever you want with it.

You don't get scene points in here.

HTH.

Jonathan.

Have you tried ignition on and then switching on full beam?

I tried this tonight (well I think I did anyway :) ) however still nothing there, I'm still waiting on the multimeter arriving so I'll have a go at the wiring probably at the weekend,

thanks for your help,

I know this may sound silly but have you checked the fuses under the dash? The back of the cover indicates which one is which and defo worth checking they are A) there B) not blown. Wee bit unlikely both fuses are blown but not impossible.

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.
