Brake q
« on: 25 February 2012, 01:53 »
Been doing some reading up as im getting a wobble when i brake sharply.. How do i check the discs are warped? The discs are only year old but thought check them too.. Will be changing tracking rods and pads next week.. Had look at pads they dont actualy look that bad :undecided:

Also at high speed 90mph plus ( private road ofcourse ) the steering shakes quite bad .. Iv had wheelS balanced and even got new tyres all around.. Would a knackered steering rack cause this or a warp disc  :undecided:

Play in steering rack or a warped disc both give the symptoms you describe, take your disc off and have it checked. Majority of cars I service, it's those using eBay grooved or drilled discs that warp.

Would this also be the same as an advisory on your MOT for 'brake imbalance' ? I got this advisory a month or so ago and they mechanic said the brakes probably just need a good clean out...

A good way of checking the brakes is to get a magnetic DTI and put on te wing and put the tip on the disc and the. Turn it and look out for the differential in measurement.

DTI stands for "dial test Indictator" it is basically a dial on a rod with a magnetic base and it has a pointer that can move in and out and as it does the dial reads how far it has moved normally in thousandths of a inch and to .01mm etc

So you put it on your wing and put the pointer on your disc and rotate the outside of the dial so the poi ter is pointing to 0 and then spin your disc and watch move any movement on the dial.
They also used for measure the concentric it's of shafts in motors, turbos etc
