thing is... the company pays you to represent them

and in this current climate you can't be too careful

if you're enjoying your job and want to progress then what harm is a haircut and beard trim?

^ That's what got me thinking a client has had a word with Nick's manager.

Fortunately most of our clients are small businesses so the managers / directors are sometimes scruffy themselves and I've felt over dressed in just a shirt, trousers and shoes

Kinda slack TBH, as I met with government inspectors the other week, and the boss was very clear with me that I had to "at least wear a shirt".  My ethos is funk that, you pay me for the knowledge and skills I bring to the table and not what I look like, so cream jumper over black T-shirt it was.  I'm shaved headed, constant stubble, and a goatee to boot.

Inspector was happy, Head of Service was happy, Service Managers commented on my good performance and someone else let it be known that the inspector felt more comfortable and relaxed talking to me, all despite my "irregular" dress code.

So I don't get what harm facial fuzz is, and as for haircut??? WTF? For me Nick, carry on as you are squire, and as Jay says, someone has said summat, so if it raises again, ask who and why.  Does the company have an acceptable dress code policy? If not....I see a pay out if they get rid of you on the grounds youre hairy...would they dismiss a women employee who was hirsute? :afro:

Dress for the job you want not the job you have.

My Career took off when I chopped my hippie locks and stopped looking deviant on the outside, also stopped getting tugged by the old bill
Its good blending into the crowd, I look like any other suit in a long Kashmir coat and case but my mind is just as it was years ago but without the need to advertise my leanings or political direction.
I think it is more subversive than having skanky dreads and a f**k the government T shirt

Something else to consider:

A nightclub lets in people only dressed with shoes and shirt...
Another lets in anyone with good music taste...

Which one would you rather be in? The one you enjoy being at which accepts you as you?
Or the one that makes you conform.

Subversion should be viewed as: Eroding the basis of belief in the status quo.
By virtue of this you need to be different from the norm, otherwise it is not subversive at all, it is conformist.

But by that very thought, you're still being a conformist by being different from the norm - just like everyone else conforms to being different from the norm, thus being a conformist  :nerd:

Wow this has gone off on some tangents!

Thanks for all the replies and advice peeps. Clearly I don't want to not pass my probation because I refuse to get a hair cut but at the same time my chin fluff has been there so long it's as much me as my nose or ears are and I'm loathed to shave it off just because my new boss is a bit old skool in his idea of what is and isn't smart.

So anyway, I was going to get a haircut this weekend already as it's a bit too long for my liking. As for the face fur, that's staying but I'll keep it trimmed shorter and wet shave the none fluff bits more often. He's also commented on the fact he doesn't like my "Clearly supermarket suits" so I'll get a new suit, although I shall be ignoring his advice on a shirts as he seems to think anything less than £50 on a shirt is not acceptable. He also has today told me brown shoes are no go, they have to be black. So looks like I'm going shoe shopping on payday as well!!!!!!

Surprised he hasn't pulled me up on my Casio 80's watch and thumb ring yet!
