I've always thought the new Megane is a looker. Especially in red with the gloss black front and wheels. Looks wise, it's a big thumbs up from me. What gets a thumbs down for me though is the lack of a DSG equivilant box (not everybody's cup of tea I realise), slightly impeded practicality due to the looks, and the resale value. Also, RenaultSport vehicles have a reputation of being the best drivers/track car, and that's great, but it's not quite what I want from a car.

Depreciate is simple though "If you want to lose the least cash over three years, you need to start with a low list price in the first place" *Quote WhatCar.com

yes, thats obvious but i do not see any relevance to what I said ?
IN ITS CLASS we are talking about
if you thinks the VW's Renault / vauxhall / ford equivalent is worth it then go for it

As for this whole debate, yes a more expensive car is likely to lose more money, but that's most demonstrated when comparing a Ferrari and a Fiesta which, even if the Ferrari retains a better percentage (say 60% compared to the Fiesta's 50%), the Ferrari has still lost the most cash. But when you're comparing two hot hatches, both £26-27k depending on options, the rule becomes less definite.

But more importantly, Jimmymature maybe you'd be better over here http://www.focusstoc.com/forums/, because you don't seem to be too happy over here.

this may come in handy too

actually dont get me wrong Jimmymature, I do respect its a forum and you should be able to post your thoughts but i cant help
but feel your always posting how good every other car is EXCEPT the one this forum is about, thats all...... No the GOLF is not
the best car in the world and yes it does have loads to dislike about it, but there is one very very very very very big thing to
LIKE and thats the way it delivers as a whole package

Spot on Pottinger. Though there are always those who are looking and are never happy because a new model comes out and they feel they must have it.

I read a recent road test on the brand new model Focus - Civic - BMW 1 - Astra to the equivalent older model golf.

The conclusion was the GOLF was the far supriour car it cost less and gave back more after three years. Winner

I havent once posted that these cars are better than the GTI, show me one post! I bought a GTI after test drving many many cars and the GTI came out the best without a doubt.  My only point is they are too expensive, it's as simple as that.

Jim, you have got to consider what your going to get back on the other cars compared to the GTI. It’s swings and round abouts

Badge snob driving a VW are you joking, I really can’t see where the snob bit comes from. Some of you have bought into marketing LOL
I have driven VW’s for the best part of 30 years and have yet to suffer a large bill or be stuck from driving.
When the last Honda Civic came out I quite fancied one so took it out for a test drive what shocked me was the road roar inside the cabin it was really loud. I could not live with that.
French cars are always at the bottom for reliability in ‘WHICH’ Then you have the huge deprecation at resale time.

Fords are fine cars just lack that special feeling. I drove a Focus down from the top of Scotland to me it felt cheap, the gear box felt light and insecure.

Liked the new Astra it felt nice but resale value after three years is horrendous.

Audis are well over priced.

BMW and Mercs, I’m put off with rear wheel drive, living in Scotland the roads can be wet and slippery while snow can be a problem in winter.

Ultimately as a middle of the road working class car the golf stay’s tighter for longer. Think how many miles it took your MPG to even out. As a private motorist the Golf is everything I ever need in a car then after three years I get a good price back.

Fully understand those who crave something different and jump from marquee to marquee its all part of the fun of driving. I done it in my younger day’s until I found the right marquee for me. VW

you think the ford gearbox feels light and insecure in comparison to the golf?

the GTI gearshift is a joke - it just flops around all over the place

i drove a neighbours 05 reg polo 1.4 and the gearbox feels identical to the gti. there is absolutely no excuse for it IMO.

don't get me wrong i love the car but things like build fit and finish, the gear change and brakes are 2nd devision at best.

You should get your car checked out and if the dealer is giving you no joy get an AA report done.
The gear change and brakes on mine are as good as I would expect.
Living out on the wilds I get the chance to have fun driving often and the brakes have never made me worry in any way.

Have you tried a few emergency stops ?

My car was bought brand new so no need to get it checked. I've driven a few golfs and they're all the same.

I hated the gear change from day 1. Within a week or two I fitted a S3 shifter arm and torque arm bushing which improved things.

The brakes are safe enough but lack feel and progression of a proper set up found on meganes and clios mini cooper s etc etc. On cars with good brakes the middle peddle is a pleasure to use but unfortunately on the golf it doesn't inspire confidence or feel particularly nice.

I think it will steal sales cos the comparable Mk 7 will no doubt be dearer, 30/40 bhp down on power, come on 18s at best (and possibly even 17s) etc etc.

You can only trade on name and supposed reputation for so long until people just have enough. I'm 44 and would happily drive that VXR so I don't buy into this anti Vauxhall VW snobbery. I liked the previous VXR but bought the Mk6 over it cos I thought it was a better day to day car than the Vauxhall. Next time (assuming I can afford any of them anyway) I will test drive both and probably the Focus and make a decision based on all factors. At the prices we are now looking at, value for money will be an important factor.

oh Andy , you know the CS is the worst and they just fall to bits !!

Tiguan quicker than the Golf

Agree 100% on the brakes, they lack feel and are wooden.  If I were keeping the GTI for longer I'd replace them for sure.
