Replica kit cars
« on: 07 February 2012, 19:36 »
Been reading CKC (complete kit car) for a while now and been thinking about giving a kit car a go. Been a member on a few dedicated forums as well. But its got me thinking that I should really like to give it a go. Lotus 7's seem to common but I do like the replica cars such as the Lancia stratos. They are not cheap to make, given that but I been thinking whether to give something outrageous a go like a MR2 mk2) v8 conversion with a Lamborghini Murcielago kit on. I know some kits look disproportional in particular Ferrari's but Peugeot chassis seem to be becoming more popular for these than the mr2's for some Ferrari's to sort this out.

Whats people's views on these replica's they are a fraction of what the real car would cost but I'd like to know what people think.

i like kit cars,  but some replica kits i think are gay.   whats the point in makeing an MR2 look like a ferrari  it won't go, handel or sound like one  in effect it's just a very chavved MR2
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

Im a fan of kit cars, have built and rebuilt a few. Replicas can work but most look disproportioned as you say. Id reccommend doing lots of research bofore you jump in and spend any money. I wouldn't reccommend a '7' style car as most people find them pretty unusable once they finish building them.

I have been building this shell from scratch for around the last 9 years now, its not a quick project more a labour of love....

Definately not going on an Mr2, it will be sat on an S3 Lotus esprit chassis so it should be quite capable once finished. Heres a link to my build thread if your interested.....

I am (re)building a kit car http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=197495.0

It's a Mk1 Mini-Midas - effectively a glassfibre lightweight coupe based on Classic Mini Mechanicals which has been standing for several years. It's fun and frustrating at the same time - I keep finding old bodges and issues but I love it. And as it it isn't a daily driver I can take my time with it.

As for replicas, well some are great such as the better quality Cobras, the Hawk Stratos and the 356s, but some are just awful such as the Capri-based Aston (really!) and various TR7 and MR2 based "Ferraris". And as for the Covin 911 which was based on the Mk3 Escort...

Keeping schtum. Mostly.

Im not sure why people feel the need to butcher mk2 MR2s. Standard ones are lovely and a looked after example will handle very well, on a par with the MX5

I don't think a semi will give the same results

 :lipsrsealed:

I was thinking of this kit, yet to do more homework, a mr2 chassis murci and a 4.7l v8 or similar, something to deliver 400 ponies. V8's are some work but not too much to fit into the mr2, someone has managed to squeeze the audi 4.2l in there. Some good coilovers and brakes.

Need to do some homework on the company, but no way do I want the 4pot engine in there, has to be v8 minimum. I've estimated about 20k to do it all, he says  :lipsrsealed: But still need some more homework.

Will be following your work lads :afro:

Also plastic fantastic, how you planning on doing the interior, I've seen a few lambo builds and interiors looked awful, this is the only thing that worries me as I want a better interior than the stock to look somewhat real. I've seen some good places that do the leather trim to dashes and there work is spot on, but how would you go around making the actual dash itself?

Looked into building one of these myself tbh :nerd:
