The R sounds cracking.  All down to personal choice.  I once pitched a similar scenario to a family member some 20 years ago.

"If you had £7k to spend would you buy a 7 year old BMW 325i sport (E30 back then) or a 2 year old Rover?"  Her answer was the latter.

It's your money and should return trouble free motoring linked to some good grin factor and also peace of mind for the 3 days of the year when the snow falls  (my S4 also came into its own)

Congrats with the deal - goes to show it's always worth shopping around and no dealer has the monopoly when selling cars (I bet they're kicking themselves now).  You need to take it to the 1st dealer for it's 1st service (with a smug look on your face)

My god  I know the R is supposed to be a damn fine car but as it only has Awd and a higher top speed over the GTI I could never justify spending nearly £40 grand on a VW, and to be honest I wouldn't want to it is just VW piss taking yet again.

Agree.... I know there is a certain exictement to buying a new car... but most of you guy have owned your GTI's from new. I think is would be much more fun to go down the a' la hurdy route and spend the extra £20k you all seem to have lying around on upgrades and modding your GTI's to blow the R away  :lipsrsealed:

I know that it's relative and all that, but if I had to put £20k on top of a very nicely speced, low mileage GTI, to get another new, but very similar car, it wouldn't happen.

Have you seen what that £20k would buy you on the used market?

There is massive list of great cars for around the £20k mark.... for me I would add a few pennies and get this

I've looked at all the used car options in the £30-40k bracket, an M3 was one of them, but the running costs are much higher than an R because it's a higher performance car. [more insurance, higher VED, lower mpg, higher servicing costs etc] and you will be out of warranty. I wanted something with very good performance and 4wd, but relatively affordable running costs and the peace of mind of 3 years warranty. So I've put my money into the car instead of the running cost. I've specced it up a bit as it will be the last new car I'll be buying for quite some time.
Gone for 3 door DSG, 19" Talladega's, rising blue, RNS510 with 6CD changer and dynaudio, ACC, cruise, rear view camera, colour MFD, lux pack and storage pack. My dealer also included 3 years gap insurance and lifeshine in the price [Worth around £800]

Cracking car mate, good choice in extras....look forward to te pics when she arrives

Thanks Mr GTD, I'm looking forward to it as well. Dealer reckons July/August/Sept, can't be sure yet. Btw, because they didn't have an R with DSG for me to test drive I tried it out in a GTD, very impressive car, with the low down torque it really picks up well.

At those prices think I'd still go for the 325i over the Rover though

Great spec. Although why not get the RCD510 instead an get the RNS on EBay. Save yourself around 1k! Takes about 5 mins to fit!

Well said. I'm sure you'll enjoy the R when it arrives it's one of the best Q cars out there - the Gti's seem to get all the unwanted attentions (unless you're a Manchester traffic cop ).

Not really sure why most of the 'R' threads always seem to concentrate on the price and what you could buy second hand with the same money. I haven't regretted spending out on mine and with the numbers that have been sold it's going to hold it's value pretty well I think....

I have had a good look round at the 30-40k options but decided that new is for me and that unless you have 50k to spend the differences are not worth it. I would not pay more than for 30k for a Golf either (at least this time round) . The R is a great car but the biggest problem with it is the GTI/ED35 which offers 95% of what the R can as there is not a big enough difference between them (unless you are going to tune it to 350+ ) Anyway good luck with R I am sure you will be very pleased with it
Current: GTI Edition 35 Candy White 5dr DSG 19" Glendale, RCD510+DAB, Dynaudio, Storage Pack, Parking Sensors

Gone: Edition 35, GTI Mk6, Edition 30, GTI Mk4, GTI Mk3, GTI Mk2 and my favourite the UR quattro
For those that dont know DSG is an electronically controlled dual-clutch multiple-shaft manual gearbox

I am sure the R is a fantastic car and I am sure RickS will enjoy it immensely.

There is soo much argument for both sides of this, me personally having only just
purchased a 2011 GTI DSG at 21k and probably v similar to RickS trade in so i
feel very  :smug: and maybe wouldnt have got the car if people didnt trade them in
like RickS will.

Is the R worth 20k on top, couldnt tell you whatsoever as I havent driven one

Driving aside and if asked the question (pre-GTI purchase) would I buy a golf for 35-40k
the answer would be no, i dont even think I would pay 30k for any golf, post-GTI purchase
it would still be no but with a very big hint of uncertainty in the no !!

Either way RickS has bought a very fine car regardless and i hope he enjoys it and I shall buy it
end of next year for 20k
