If you want the conventional looks then go for a Golf2.
If you want something cheap, find a Golf3 16V with a good body (good luck!).
Strip it out and cage it.
The red G2 on Pistonheads is a sh*tter. Alloy cages (especially half cages) are dangerous and should be weighed in.
Strip it of all the sound deadening etc and go through all of the bushes, replacing what's knackered.
Don't do a cage unless you can step up to cage, with harness bars and proper bucket seats, on tubular mounts. If you do part of that equation you will be reducing safety over what's in there OEM.
Don't put cheap coilovers on it, if it has cheap coilovers on it, replace with good struts (Bilstein) or some proper coilovers.
Turbo motors aren't loved by those who have dedicated track motors not only for the lacklustre power delivery, but also because they have more to go wrong. Nothing worse than a shonky old turbo motor deciding to blow its oil seals and feed itself the engine's oil supply.
