I think so mate. The short from the exposed wiring across the fan wasn't the cause cos the battery was drained again a couple of days later.  I then decided to rip the whole "uprated" loom out, and touch wood, it's been fine since. I'll reserve judgement for a few more days though just to make sure, but I think I've got it now. Was probably the relays, but think it was a cheap eBay one so I'll get a decent one at some point. Also degreased the bay in the week, looks so much better now, and you can actually tell it had a refurbished gearbox a couple of years ago! Also painted the DOHC 16V on the inlet manni red, and part polished up the raised part. Not gonna post pics yet, as I'm gonna take the cam cover off next w.end and paint that up too. I've had the gasket set since I bought the car but just not got round to doing it yet! :embarassed: will post some pics when it's all finished.

Standard headlight loom goes all the way around the bay, and loses around 2 volts before it reaches the lights due to its length. Uprated light loom either splices or connects to standard plugs (depending on quality) from the fuse box, and direct from the battery via a relay to the headlights. So with the uprated loom, your getting almost the full 12 volts at the lights as opposed to around 10v on the standard loom. Usually this is very very apparent with the amount of light output. I have decent phillips bulbs in though, so tbh the difference is pretty minimal. No real need to replace it if I'm honest.

Been busy today! Only done a few things since last update, earth is no more thanks to removal of uprated headlight loom, horn now works after I had to disconnect it because of constant contact. Bit of sticky backed foam and jobs a good un. MOT in the next couple of weeks. Got the ramps booked Monday afternoon in work, so I can have a proper root around and check. Think I have a few bushes that will need changing out, but other than that I think I'm good to go. :smug:

I also wangled a trade card out of Halfrauds last week! Thought I'd give it a try, and got some new washer hose that was £2.99, for £1.19.

Spent the day on it today though. Got a few things coming to spruce the bay up a bit more, but a tin of Hammered Black hammerite, some flash red from a while ago, some VHT silver I used on the Golf lump, and some wet n dry and here I am.

Before.

During

After.

Still got the lower inlet manni to do, new expansion tank and red return hose to come, as well as blue vac lines. Chuck some paint at the metering head, and fuel pipe unions and put on the strut brace that I got last week, red HT leads sometime soon, and I think thats it.

That looks really tidy now.   Nice...

You're the second person I've seen on here that has wrangled a halfrauds trade car, how did you do it?  I want one.

Cheers guys!.

Not really much use to you sorry Shaun, I got one using my forces ID as I'm an engineer anyway.
Worth trying using some old receipts you may have, and quoting the forum. They can only say yes or no.  I had to get mine in now as I may be looking for work at the end of May when my medical survey happens.
